Mat Masters Station Cards
Station 1
Forward Roll
Gymnastics Foundation
Skill Progression Card
Core Objective
Learn to safely tuck your chin, round your spine, transfer your weight smoothly, and roll without placing pressure on your head.
The Golden Rule
NEVER put weight on top of your head! Roll on the back of your shoulders.
Level 01 Beginner
Rock & Roll (The Curved Spine)
Setup Prep
Start in a deep squat hugging your shins. Chin must touch your chest. Roll back onto your spine like a rocking chair, then roll back up to a squat.
Chin to Chest Round Spine Hug Shins Tight
Level 02 Standard
The Classic Roll
Primary Skill
Start in a squat, hands flat on mat. Lift hips, look through your legs, tuck your chin. Push off with toes and roll over your shoulders, ending in a tuck squat.
Hands Flat on Mat Hide the Head Land on Shoulders
Level 03 Advanced
Stand & Salute
Pro Challenge
Perform a complete forward roll starting from a standing stretch. Roll with high momentum, tucking tightly. Stand back up into a salute without using your hands to help you push up.

How to Coach Safely
- Watch your partner from the side of the mat (never stand directly in front or back).
- Make sure they are starting and finishing on the mat surface.
- Remind them to tuck their chin before they lift their hips.
| Phase & Skill | Observation Criteria (What to look for) | Check if Seen |
|---|
| 1. Setup Position | Gymnast is squatting low with heels close together, arms straight out in front, and eyes focused on hands. | |
| | |
| 2. Spine Tuck | Gymnast presses chin firmly down to chest. Tuck is held constant as hips lift up. | |
|
| 3. Shoulder Touch | The back of the head does NOT touch the mat. Hips go over, and shoulders land gently. |
|
| 4. Smooth Finish | Gymnast tucks shins tightly to roll up onto their feet. Finished in a stable balanced stance. |

Flat Hands Locked Elbows Hop Over Line

Wide Hand Base Sideways Kick Two-Foot Landing
Level 03 Advanced
The Linear Cartwheel

Straight Lunge Start Fully Straight Legs Lunge Landing
Mental Mantra
"Lunge - Hand - Hand - Foot - Foot!"

SKILL 1
Forward Roll Spotting Protocol
The goal of spotting the forward roll is to prevent hyper-flexion of the neck and guide the gymnast's hips through the roll with sufficient rotation and zero head load.
Hand 1: The Guard Hand
Place your hand gently on the back of the student's neck / upper shoulders. This manually guides and ensures the chin remains tucked tight to the chest.
Hand 2: The Boost Hand
Place your opposite hand under the student's hamstrings or lower hip area to lift their hips and push their weight forward into the roll.
| Common Error | Why It's Dangerous | Spotter Direct Action |
|---|
| Head touches mat first | Neck axial compression hazard. No head weight is allowed. | Halt roll immediately. Reset student. Press your hand on their neck to cue tuck. |
| Legs flare / spread out | Loss of core control, potential hip or knee hyperextension. | Instruct gymnast to "hug the shins" with hands as they roll up. |
| Slowing/Stalling out | Gymnast collapses onto back, cannot stand without wrists. | Use Hand 2 to gently slide and boost their hamstrings upward to stand. |
Progression Checkpoint
Do not permit students to move to Station 1 Standard Roll until they can hold a tight round "Rock & Roll" hold for 3 reps.

SKILL 2
Cartwheel Spotting Protocol
Spotting a cartwheel requires active movement from the spotter. The core goal is supporting the gymnast's hips as they pass upside down, preventing wrist or elbow collapse.
The Crossed-Wrist Technique
Before the student kicks, stand behind their hips. Cross your wrists in an "X" shape. This allows your hands to grip the hips seamlessly as they rotate.
Guiding Hips & Landing
Uncross your wrists as their hips go vertical, lifting their weight gently. Guide their feet down in a straight, aligned line to prevent any twist landing.
