Lesson Timeline
15 MIN
Introduction to the Medium
Briefly introduce the concept of graphic novels and their significance.
Visual Literacy: Show examples of panel flow (Z-pattern) and guttermanship.
Discussion: Use the slide deck to explore "What makes graphic novels unique?"
Quick Peek: Flip through samples to show varying art styles (Manga vs. American vs. Indie).
15 MIN
The Architect's Phase (Brainstorming)
Distribute the Story Planning Worksheet.
Character Core: Focus on "What does the character want?" and "What is in their way?"
Mini-Plot: Map out the 3-act structure for just ONE page of action.
Peer Pitch: Students share their concept with a neighbor for 2 minutes to test clarity.
45 MIN
Pencils Down, Ink Out (Activity)
Creation of the graphic novel page.
Layout: Start with light pencil "thumbnails" to plan panel placement.
Visual Storytelling: Remind students to show, not just tell. If a character is angry, show the clenched fist.
Narrative Flow: Ensure word bubbles are placed in a way that doesn't block the art and follows reading order.
15 MIN
Gallery Walk & Feedback
Sharing: Lay pages out on tables for a "Silent Gallery Walk."
Feedback: Ask students to identify one "Dynamic Panel" and one "Strong Dialogue Moment" in their peers' work.
Discussion: How did the visuals change the way the story felt?
Facilitator Notes
Differentiation: For students who struggle with drawing, offer pre-made panel layouts or suggest a "minimalist" style like stick figures with high-impact dialogue.
Engagement: Encourage the use of onomatopoeia (BAM! CRASH!) to add energy to the page. Remind them that silence (panels without text) can be very powerful.

NAME:
DATE:
1
The Big Idea
What is the central theme or message of your story? (e.g., courage, mystery, friendship)
2
Hero & Conflict
Who is the Protagonist?
Think personality, special skills, or visual quirks.
What is their Goal?
What do they want, and what is stopping them?
3
The Narrative Arc
Break your single page into three key beats:
Beginning
Set the scene and the conflict...
Middle
The action rises or a choice is made...
End
The resolution or a cliffhanger!
Pro-Tip: Don't try to tell a whole novel on one page. Focus on one high-impact scene or a pivotal conversation.
