Art 2: Slab-Built Gargoyles
Gargoyle or Grotesque?
The Gargoyle
- Functional: Acts as a waterspout to keep rain away from the cathedral walls.
- Comes from the Old French word "gargouille" (throat).
The Grotesque
- Decorative: Sculpted figures meant to ward off evil or simply adorn.
- Does not channel water. Usually purely artistic or symbolic.
"Our project will combine both: Structural slab building with decorative features."
The Foundation: Slab Basics

The Body
Create a hollow cylinder or box. This is your "Sentinel's" core structure. Ensure walls are 1/4" to 3/8" thick.

Internal Support
Use crumpled paper or internal struts if your guardian is large or leans. Trap air to support the weight, but poke a hole!

Scoring & Slip
The Golden Rule. If you don't scratch and attach, your features will fall off in the kiln. Be aggressive with your scoring.
💡 Pro Tip: Join slabs when they are "Leather Hard" for better structural integrity.
Focus: Expressive Features
Eyes & Brows
Deep-set eyes with heavy, furrowed brows create drama and menace.
The Mouth
Open mouths can serve as vents. Consider fangs, curled lips, or bared teeth.
Noses & Horns
Exaggerate! Broad snouts, hooked noses, or curved horns add character.
The Secret: Volume
Don't just scratch features into the slab. Add volume.
1. Score the area.
2. Add a lump of clay.
3. Blend the edges into the base.
4. Sculpt the detail into the new mass.
Surface & Texture
Additive
Adding scales, fur patches, warts, or rocky ridges. Builds 3D depth.
Subtractive
Carving lines for wrinkles, scars, or stone cracks. Use needle tools.
Impressed
Stamping with burlap, lace, or textured objects to mimic ancient stone.
Your goal: Use at least THREE different texture techniques.

DAY 1
Introduction & Ideation
View slides, discuss history. Students complete "Sentinel Sketchbook" planning sheet.
DAY 2
Slab Construction
Roll slabs. Construct the main body/vessel. Set up internal supports.
DAY 3-4
Facial Sculpting
Focus on additive features. Adding eyes, noses, and horns. Focus on volume and expression.
DAY 5-6
Texture & Refinement
Apply the 3 texture types. Refine joins. Add air vents and hollow out heavy sections.
