Positive vs. Negative Space Studies

Every cut you gouge out holds no ink. It reveals the white printmaking paper. Gouge marks create dynamic texture and light.
Positive Space (Raised / Inked)
Uncut surface areas receive the rolled brayer ink. They print as solid, bold black shapes and defining silhouettes.

Gouge Selection Guide
#1 Small V-Gouge: Hairlines, tiny details, delicate contour outlines.
#2 Medium V-Gouge: Bold outlines, deep directional cross-hatching.
#3 Small U-Gouge: Clearing linoleum adjacent to positive shapes.
#5 Large U-Gouge: Rapid negative space clearing; background rhythm.
Safety Protocol
- • Always carve away from your non-tool hand.
- • Lock block against the bench hook ridge.
- • Rotate the block, never twist your wrist.
- • Maintain shallow cuts (1-2mm deep).
The Three Steps to a Crisp Impression
Listen for the “Velvet Hiss” of inked brayers
1. Ink Consistency
Roll ink in a smooth ribbon. Texture should resemble orange peel, not thick pudding or dry sandpaper.
2. Block Charging
Roll evenly in two directions (north-south, then east-west). Avoid pooling ink inside carved gouge troughs.
3. Even Burnishing
Position paper gently. Apply firm, circular friction with the baren or wooden spoon. Check a corner before lifting!
