Stance Secrets Slides LOW & LEAN
The Art of the Defensive Stance
Lesson 1: Individual Defensive Mastery
The Shadow Challenge
Before we touch a ball, we must master the mirror.
Find a partner. One is the "Mover," one is the "Shadow."
Shadow must keep a 2-yard gap at all times.
No lunging! Only movement.
Focus Goal
Can you stay in front of your partner for 30 seconds without crossing your feet?
The "Big Three" Cues
Low Base
Bend your knees. Keep your center of gravity low so you can't be knocked off balance.
Side-On
Stand at a 45-degree angle. One foot forward, one back. Never flat-footed.
Ball Focus
Keep your eyes on the ball, not the player's feet or hips. The ball is the target.
Jockeying
"Patience is the defender's weapon."
Key Definition
Delaying the attacker to wait for support or a mistake.
1
Close the space quickly, then slow down as you reach the attacker.
2
"Show them the sideline." Use your angle to steer them away from the goal.
3
Move your feet in small, quick "shuffling" steps. Don't cross your legs!
FORCE WIDE
Quick Check
Why do we stay side-on?
It allows us to turn and sprint quickly in either direction and prevents us from getting "nutmegged" (the ball going through our legs).

Shadow Challenge Reflection
1. What was the most difficult part of mirroring your partner's movement?
2. When you were "Shadowing," why did we try to keep a 2-yard gap instead of standing right next to the attacker?
Field Vision
Imagine an attacker is sprinting down the right sideline . If you are the defender, which way should your body be angled (side-on), and where are you trying to "steer" them?

Lesson 2: Winning the Ball Safely
The Block Tackle
When to use:
"When the attacker is close and the ball is loose."
Plant Foot: Strong and stable next to the ball.
Inner Foot: Lock the ankle! Use the inside of your foot.
Body: Lean slightly forward into the contact.
Safety Check
Never tackle with your studs up or from behind. Keep it clean!
The Poke Tackle
Precision
Use the toe to "poke" the ball away from the attacker's path.
1
Wait for a heavy touch.
2
Extend your leading leg.
3
Flick the ball to a teammate or out of play.
The "No-Go" Zone
Studs Up
Showing the bottom of your cleats is dangerous and an immediate foul.
Through the Player
You must touch the ball FIRST. Tripping or pushing the player is a foul.
Slide from Behind
Never tackle an attacker from behind. It's unsafe and unsportsmanlike.
Safe Tackle = Successful Defense
The Timing Test
In slow-motion drills today, focus on the exact moment the attacker loses control of the ball. That is your window.

Partner Notes:
The Fair Play Oath
I understand that a good tackle is won with timing and technique , not strength and aggression. I will prioritize the safety of my opponents by targeting the ball, not the body.

The Roles
1
Pressure
"The First Defender"
Your job is to close down the ball carrier, stop their progress, and force a mistake.
2
Cover
"The Second Defender"
Your job is to support the 1st defender. If they get beat, you are the safety net.
The "Invisible Rope"
Visual Hook
Imagine a 10-yard rope connecting you and your partner.
If one moves forward, the other slides into position.
Never get too far apart (broken rope).
Never stand on top of each other.
Formation: The Diagonal Cover
Defensive Vocab
"I'VE GOT BALL!"
Tells your partner YOU are the 1st defender (Pressure).
"I'VE GOT COVER!"
Tells your partner YOU are supporting behind them.
"STEP UP!"
Commands the 1st defender to close the gap faster.
"FORCE LEFT/RIGHT!"
Directs the 1st defender to steer the attacker toward support.
Stay Connected
A defense that talks is a defense that wins . In our 2v2 drills, if I can't hear you from the sideline, you aren't defending!

Instructions:
• Draw a P where the 1st Defender (Pressure) should be.
• Draw a C where the 2nd Defender (Cover) should be.
• Draw an Arrow showing which way you are forcing the attacker.

Instructions:
• Draw your P and C.
• Draw the Invisible Rope between the two defenders.
• Think: Why is the diagonal position safer than standing side-by-side?

Lesson 4: Defensive Strategy
Two Ways to Mark
Man-to-Man
Every defender is assigned a specific opponent. Where they go, you go.
"Stick like glue!"
Zonal
Defenders guard a specific area (zone) of the box. You attack any ball that enters your zone.
"Own your space!"
The 3-Second Rule
1
Find Your Mark
Instantly identify the player or zone you are responsible for.
2
Body Position
Stay between your opponent and the goal (Goal-Side).
3
Attack the Ball
Don't wait for the ball to reach you. Be first to the contact.

The Golden Rule
Always be between your opponent and the goal.
"If you can see the back of their jersey, you are on the wrong side!"
See the ball AND the player.
Be ready to jump and head.

Shutdown Simulation Recap
1. Describe one moment during the simulation where your team's defense successfully regained possession . What was the key principle (Stance? Cover? Tackle?) that made it work?
2. Think about a time your team conceded a goal or a shot . Looking back, how could communication have prevented that opportunity?
The Mastermind Quote
"A defender is the foundation of the team. We don't need the spotlight; we just need to be the wall."
3. What is one personal goal you have for your defensive play in the next unit?
