Stay low! Your body should be a coiled spring ready to release energy forward, not upward.

Push through your ankle, knee, and hip simultaneously for maximum ground force.

Aggressive "pocket to chin" arm swings balance the force generated by your legs.
The Drive Phase
The first 10-15 meters
Form Check
1 Head Down: Keep your eyes looking 2-3 feet in front of your start line.
2 Positive Shin Angle: Shins should point forward, not vertical.
3 Piston Action: Drive the knees forward with power.
Don't stand up too early!
The longer you drive, the faster you get.
Track Mission: The 3-Step Drive
The Drill
Line up in a "Falling Start" position (lean forward until you have to step).
Explode for exactly 3 steps focusing ONLY on the drive angle.
Freeze on the 4th step to check your body height.
Repeat 5 times with partner feedback.
Pro Tip
Imagine you are pushing a heavy sled. Your body should be at a 45-degree angle to the ground during those first few steps.

Troubleshooting Common Mistakes
Mistake: The "Pop Up"
Student stands upright immediately, losing horizontal momentum.

Tiny, fast arm movements that don't match leg power.
Fix: Cue "Pocket to Chin" or "Hammer the nail" backwards with the elbows.

The Mechanics of Maintenance
Once acceleration ends, sprinting becomes a game of "maintenance and relaxation." Students often tighten up as they get tired, which causes deceleration. This lesson teaches them to use skeletal alignment and efficient foot strikes to stay fast without wasting energy.

Mark a 50m zone. 0-20m: Acceleration. 20-40m: Max Velocity (The Zone). 40-50m: Deceleration. Only grade the middle 20m.

Keep the baton moving for 5 minutes straight as a whole class or group.
No dropping the baton.
No stopping.
Everyone must touch it.
"The baton is the brain of the race. Don't let it go to sleep!"
The Blind Exchange
Outgoing
Position: Inside of lane, looking back at mark.
Action: Explode when incoming runner hits the mark.
Hand: "High-V" or "Hand-Back" on verbal command.
NEVER look back once you start!
Incoming
Position: Outside of lane to avoid collision.
Command: Loud "STICK!" or "GO!" when 2m away.
Action: Reach forward, place baton firmly in hand.
Maintain speed through the zone!
The 30-Meter Zone
ACCEL
Exchange Zone (30m)
The Mark
The spot on the track where the outgoing runner starts moving.
The Stick
The verbal command given by the incoming runner.
The Pass
Ideally happens in the middle of the zone at full speed.
Avoid the DQ!

Baton must change hands entirely within the 30m exchange zone.
The Drop
If you drop it, the person who dropped it must pick it up without interfering.
Interference
Stay in your lane after the pass until the track is clear.

The Baton is Brain
The 4x100m relay is often won by the team with the best handoffs, not the fastest runners. At the 7th grade level, the primary challenge is trust . Students naturally want to look back. This lesson focuses on the verbal command and the spatial timing of the 30m zone.

Stationary Handoffs
Pairs stand 2m apart. Practice the "Stick!" command and the "Hand-back" (palm up, thumb out). Switch roles every 10 passes.

Walking/Jogging Passes
Pairs move at 50% speed. Emphasize "Lane Integrity": Incoming on the outside, Outgoing on the inside. Pass from Right hand to Left hand.

The "Mark" Challenge
Full speed in the zone. Outgoing runner places a cone 10-15 steps behind them. When the incoming runner hits that cone, the outgoing runner EXPLODES.

Problem: Runners are colliding
Solution: Reinforce Right-to-Left passing. Runner 1 (R hand) → Runner 2 (L hand). This keeps them on opposite sides of the lane.

Beyond the Sprint
Middle distance (400m/800m) is the bridge between sprinting and endurance. The primary learning outcome is Self-Regulation . 7th graders often lack the kinesthetic awareness to judge their own speed. This lesson uses split times to provide objective data on their internal "governor."

The 400m Coaching Blueprint
Phase 1: The Build (0-100m)
Cue: "Drive out of the blocks." They should reach 95% of top speed quickly but efficiently.
Phase 2: The Float (100-200m)
Cue: "Relax the shoulders." The goal is to maintain the speed generated in Phase 1 with the least amount of effort possible.
Phase 3: The Attack (200-300m)
Cue: "Turn the corner." This is where the race is usually won or lost. Students must consciously increase their effort to combat fatigue.
Phase 4: The Dig (300-400m)
Cue: "Eyes on the finish." Focus on mechanics: high knees and pumping arms to offset "heavy legs."
The Split-Time Experiment
Step 1: The "Fly and Die"
Have half the class run a 400m. Tell them to sprint the first 200m as hard as they can. Partners record splits at 200m and 400m. Expect a massive difference (positive split).
Step 2: The "Calculated Finish"
Tell them to run the first 200m at a "comfortable fast" pace (approx 80%). Then, "Sprint" the final 200m. Compare times. Usually, total time is faster even though they felt slower.
Closing Discussion: "Why did your body feel more 'in control' during the second run? How did that control affect your final time?"

Assessment should be based on the execution of technique under pressure, rather than just raw speed. A student who finishes last but maintains a perfect drive phase and relaxed shoulders shows more mastery than a naturally fast student with poor mechanics.
