The objective of this lesson is to help students distinguish between a standardized serving size and a personal portion size. Students will use mathematical reasoning to calculate the total nutritional content of a package when more than one serving is consumed.

"How does understanding the difference between serving sizes and portions change the way we look at food labels?"

The "Eye Test"
Before showing the slides or handing out labels, give each student/group a bag of snacks. Ask them to pour out what they believe is one normal serving onto a plate.
Teacher Note:
Students should NOT look at the label yet. This creates a powerful 'aha' moment when they realize their portion is often 2-3x the official serving.

Use the provided slide deck to define key terms. Focus on:
Serving Size: Standard unit for label data (NOT a recommendation of how much to eat).
Portion: The actual amount someone eats.
The "Hidden" Math: If you eat 2 servings, you double everything (calories, fat, sugar).
Phase 3: The Lab Activity (25 min)

Measurement & Calculation
Students complete "The Serving Size Slip-Up Worksheet". They will:
Measure the portion they poured in Step 1 using measuring cups.
Compare it to the official serving size on the label.
Calculate the total calories and sugar in the entire package .
Guiding Questions during Lab:
"If you ate that entire portion, how many official servings did you actually have?"
"Why do you think the serving size for cereal is so much smaller than what most kids eat?"
Phase 4: Debrief (5-10 min)

The Marketing Mystery
Discuss why food companies might choose small serving sizes (e.g., to make calorie counts look lower on the front of the box). Challenge students to find a food where the serving size is "the whole bag."
Differentiation
For students needing support: Provide a pre-filled "Multiplier Table" to help with the calculations (e.g., if servings = 3.5, list common calorie amounts multiplied by 3.5).
For advanced students: Ask them to calculate the percentage of their total daily calories that one portion of their snack represents (based on a 2,000 calorie diet).
Key Misconception
Students often think the Serving Size is a recommendation of how much they SHOULD eat. Emphasize that it is just a unit of measure so all nutrition info on that label is consistent.

Focus: % Daily Value Mastery
The Mission
Students often get bogged down in grams and milligrams. This activity forces them to use the 5/20 Rule to make snap judgments about nutritional density. By focusing on the percentage, they learn to quickly identify which foods are "seeking" nutrients and which are "limiting" nutrients.
Game Mechanics
Students work in "Lab Pairs". You will read out a nutrient and its %DV from a "Mystery Product". Students must race to slap the HIGH, LOW, or JUST RIGHT (IN BETWEEN) zone on their desk.
Preparation
Cut out 3 cards per pair: one RED (Low), one GREEN (High), one YELLOW (Mid).
Alternatively, students can just use their "Nutrient Detective Handbook" to point.

Discussion Prompts
Q: Why is 20% "good" for Fiber but "bad" for Saturated Fat?
A: Because Fiber is a nutrient we want to seek (get more of), while Saturated Fat is a nutrient we want to limit (get less of).
Q: What happens if a food is 12% in everything?
A: It's in the "middle ground". It's not particularly high or low. For 6th graders, focus on identifying the extremes first.

The Investigation
In this activity, students encounter a "Mystery List" of ingredients. The goal is to strip away the packaging and marketing, forcing students to judge a product only by what's inside.
The Reveal Strategy
Display the ingredient list on the board or hand out the Log. Have students guess what the food is. Common guesses for ultra-processed items include "plastic," "chemicals," or "medicine." The shock of the reveal (e.g., a "healthy" cereal or a popular snack cake) drives home the point of processing.

2. Total vs. Added
Which one has less Added Sugar? That's usually the winner.
3. Nutrient Density
Which one has more things to SEEK (Fiber, Vitamins) and less things to LIMIT (Sodium, Sat Fat)?
4. Ingredient Quality
Which list is shorter and easier to pronounce? Whole foods win!
