Hola y Respeto

A 4-day introductory Spanish unit focusing on the critical distinction between formal (usted) and informal (tú) registers in diverse cultural contexts. Aligned with NYS World Language Standards, students master greetings, introductions, and cultural etiquette through an 'I Do, We Do, You Do' gradual release model.

El Dilema del Registro

Day 1 introduces the concept of register (formal vs. informal), exploring why Spanish speakers distinguish between 'tú' and 'usted'. Students learn fundamental greetings, hand gestures, and how to identify situational context.

Amigos y Colegas

Day 2 focuses deeply on the informal register (tú). Students practice peer-to-peer introductions, talk about hobbies, use colloquial greetings (¿Qué tal?, ¿Cómo te va?), and master peer etiquette in school and community environments.

Respeto y Autoridad

Day 3 explores the formal register (usted) in professional and formal settings. Students learn vocabulary for adult interactions (sir, ma'am, titles like Señor/Señora), polite responses, and body language that conveys respect.

Desafío de Registros

Day 4 is the cumulative synthesis. Students apply code-switching between formal and informal registers in rapid-fire scenarios. They explore regional differences in greeting customs and complete a cumulative performance assessment.
