Time: 45-60 min
Lesson Overview
Students will explore the vertical plane of defense. By dividing the body into quadrants, they simplify the decision-making process during a physical confrontation. The focus is on mechanical efficiency : using the structure of the forearm and specific angles to redirect force.

The Hook: Noodle Samurai (5-10 min)
Start with the drill before explaining the mechanics. Give students a noodle and tell them to defend. They will likely be chaotic. Use this to explain why we need structure and quadrants .

Theory: Quadrants & Centerline (10 min)
Project Slide 3. Explain that the centerline is the most vulnerable part of the body. Blocks should move away from the centerline. Have students complete Part 1 of their worksheet.
03
Skill Building: Vertical Blocks (15 min)
Demonstrate the Rising Block (45° angle is key) and the Downward Block (start from opposite shoulder).

"Make a roof, not a table." (Table allows the attack to land on top; roof slides it off).

"Seatbelt and Sweep." (Cross like a seatbelt, sweep the bug off your leg).
Safety Protocol
NOODLE CONTROL: Noodles must only be swung at 25% speed. Strikes should be targeted at the shoulders/quads, never the face.
SPACING: Ensure at least 6 feet between pairs.
EYE CONTACT: Defender must keep eyes on the partner's core, not the noodle.
Common Errors
THE "FLAT" BLOCK: Students block the Rising Block with their forearm parallel to the ground. Correction: Angle the wrist higher than the elbow.
CLOSING EYES: Students flinch and look away. Correction: "Watch their chest, not their hands."
T-REX ARMS: Blocking too close to the body. Correction: "Push the block away from your face."

The Centerline is an imaginary vertical line that runs through the very center of your body (head, throat, chest, solar plexus, groin). Most vital organs are located here.
Rule #1 of Deflection: Cross the line.
If you don't push the attack past your centerline, you are just pushing it into your own body!

When someone grabs your wrist, they are using their strength against your strength. To win, we stop pulling and start using LEVERAGE.

Small bones in the hand break easily. If you punch a hard surface (like a forehead), you are more likely to break your hand than stop the threat.
