Unit Philosophy
This unit shifts the focus of substance awareness from "rules and consequences" to **physiology and mechanics**. By using analogies (engines, brakes, telephone wires), we help 3rd graders understand why medicine is powerful and why it must be handled specifically by professionals. We focus on three categories: Stimulants , Depressants , and Painkillers/Opioids .
Note on Sensitive Topics:
When discussing opioids and habit-forming behaviors, use the "sticky signal" analogy to keep the concept age-appropriate while maintaining the gravity of the safety rules.
Lesson 1: Control Center
Key Activity: The Ruler Drop
Students catch a ruler to establish their "baseline" reaction time. This is critical for Lesson 5, where they learn that medicine disrupts this baseline.
Hook: Ask "How fast is your brain?"
Discussion: What happens to your heartbeat when you're scared vs. sleeping?
