The Balancing Act
Pick 5 random objects from your hunt.
Arrange them into a structure that feels "stable but dynamic."

Principles of the Build
1. Asymmetry
Balance without boredom.
Instead of mirroring sides, use visual weight (texture, size, color) to balance the piece across a central axis.
2. Focal Point
The 'Hook'.
Where does the eye land first? Use contrast or convergence to lead the viewer to a specific object.
3. Negative Space
The 'Air'.
The space between objects is as important as the objects themselves. It creates "breathing room" and defines form.
4. Visual Flow
The 'Journey'.
Arrange objects to create implied lines that move the viewer's eye through the entire sculpture.
The Drafting Phase
Assemblage is like writing: your first draft is rarely your best. We use Iterative Prototyping.

Learning Objectives
Students will apply the four principles of 3D composition: Asymmetry, Focal Point, Negative Space, and Visual Flow.

The "No Glue" Rule
During the iteration phase, students must not join objects permanently. Why? Permanent choices kill experimentation. If they glue it, they stop thinking about the composition.
Encourage Failure
If an arrangement collapses, celebrate it! Ask: "How can we shift the center of gravity to make this work?"
Force the Pivot
After Iteration 01, challenge them to completely flip the orientation (e.g., if it was vertical, make it horizontal).
Critique Prompts: Moving the Eye
"The Path"
"Point to where your eye enters the sculpture. Now, trace the path your eye takes. Is there a 'dead end' where you get stuck?"
"The Anchor"
"What is the 'heaviest' part of this piece visually? Does it feel like it's going to tip over, or is the weight balanced by negative space?"
"The Silhouette"
"Walk around the piece. Does the shape change in an interesting way from the side? Or does it disappear?"
Common Misconception: Centeredness
Students often default to Symmetry (everything in the middle). Remind them that Asymmetry creates more tension and interest. Challenge them to move their focal point 1/3 of the way from any edge (Rule of Thirds).

Students will successfully execute three mechanical joins: Bolting, Wire Wrapping, and Screwing.
Students will maintain a clean and safe workstation during shop time.
Workshop Flow (90 Min Block Recommended)
00-15 MIN DEMO: Safety & Tool Anatomy. All eyes on the drill.
15-30 MIN TECH STATIONS: 5-min rotations at bolting, wiring, and riveting stations.
30-80 MIN BUILD: Students begin permanent assembly of their chosen iteration.
80-90 MIN CLEANUP: Sweeping, tool organization, safety sweep.

The "Two-Hand" Rule
Ensure students NEVER hold the object they are drilling with their hands. Use vises or clamps to secure the work to the table. Most injuries in assemblage happen from the "spinning object" effect.
Troubleshooting Difficult Joins
Metal to Metal?
Rivets are the cleanest way to join thin metal sheets. If the metal is thick, drill and tap or use a nut-and-bolt sandwich.
Plastic to Wood?
Be careful of cracking. Drill a "pilot hole" in the plastic that is slightly larger than the screw, and a smaller pilot hole in the wood.
Irregular Shapes?
Wire wrapping is your friend. "Lash" the items together like a scout lashing a raft. Use 2-3 points of contact for stability.
Structural Wobble?
Triangulate! Two points of connection prevent rotation. One bolt acts as a hinge; two bolts act as a lock.
Circulating the Room
"As you move, listen for the sound of high-pitched drilling (dull bits) or the smell of burning wood. Check in with every student at least once to verify their clamp setup before they pull the trigger."

Anatomy of the Statement
1. The Origin
What were the original objects? Where did they come from? (e.g., "Discarded kitchen appliances found in a junk drawer.")
2. The Process
How were they unified? What technical choices did you make? (e.g., "Bolted together and unified with a rusted patina.")
3. The Meaning
What is the metaphor? What should the viewer FEEL? (e.g., "The piece explores the anxiety of modern technology.")
Metaphor vs. Literal
Don't say:
"I glued a doll head to a toaster because it looked cool."
Instead, try:
"By housing a childhood relic within a cold, industrial machine, I am commenting on the loss of innocence in a digital age."

Criteria:

The Role of the Facilitator
