Island Survival Slides The Shrinking Island
Can your team stay safe when the tide comes in? Let's start our adventure!
The Mission
The Island
Your group is standing on a beautiful island (a tarp or blanket).
The Tide
Oh no! The water is rising. We must fold the island to make it smaller.
Survival Rule:
If anyone touches the water (the floor), you must start over!
Team Talk
How can we make space for everyone?
Who should stand in the middle? Who should stand on the edge?
What is the kindest way to hold onto each other for balance?

Activity Setup
Materials: 1 tarp or large blanket per group of 5-6 students. Clear floor space.
Formation: Scatter groups around the room. Ensure there is space between 'islands' to prevent collisions.
Instructional Steps
1. The Hook
Tell the story of the Rising Tide. The tarp is the only dry land left! Everyone must be on the tarp when you shout "High Tide!"
2. The Challenge
After each successful round, tell them the tide is coming in more. They must step off, fold the tarp in half, and try again. Repeat until it's physically impossible for everyone to fit.
3. Safety Check
Remind students: "No standing on shoulders" and "Keep feet on the floor/tarp only." Encourage hugging/holding arms for balance.
Support (Scaffolding)
Allow groups to keep one foot 'in the water' for balance if they are struggling with stability.
Extension (Challenge)
Silence! Groups must solve the problem without talking, using only hand signals and eye contact.
Post-Game Questions:
What was the hardest fold to manage?
How did you decide who stands where?
What happened to our island when we stopped talking?
Lava Leap Slides Lava Leap
Can your team cross the river of fire?
The Scenario
1
The floor is HOT LAVA! You cannot touch it.
2
You only have 3 Magic Rocks (polyspots).
3
Everyone must cross together .
The Big Question
"If you use all 3 rocks to walk, how do you get them back to move again?"
Pass the rocks!
Stay Close!

Crucial Rules
The Floating Rock: A rock must have a foot on it at all times. If no one is touching it, "the current" takes it (Teacher removes it for 30 seconds).
Lava Toes: If anyone touches the floor, the whole team goes back to the starting bank.
Winning Strategies to Observe
The Chain: The team lines up on the first two rocks. The third rock is passed from the back of the line to the front. The front person places it, everyone moves forward, and the process repeats.
The Scout: One person stays on a rock while another moves forward. This is harder for 1st graders but shows advanced thinking.
Teacher Tips
Frustration Peak:
If a team keeps restarting, pause them. Ask: "Who is in charge of the rocks? Who is in charge of the feet?" Assign roles.
Differentiation:
Decrease/Increase distance or rock count. For 1st grade, start with 4 rocks for a 4-person team to introduce the concept.
Magic Stick Slides The Magic Stick
It looks light as a feather... but it's harder than it looks!
The Mission
One Finger Only
Every person puts one index finger under the stick.
Lower to Ground
Your finger MUST touch the stick at all times.
The Warning:
"If anyone lets go, the stick will 'float' back up to the ceiling!"
How to Win?
Listen
Listen to the group's speed.
Breathe
Stay calm and move slowly.
Focus
Watch your finger and the stick.

Stick Challenge Teacher Tips
The Science of Why it "Floats"
Small involuntary movements from a group actually push the stick up. When someone feels the stick moving up, they instinctively lift their finger to keep contact, causing a chain reaction. It's a physical lesson in impulse control .
The Gear
The Stick: Use a very lightweight tent pole or a hula hoop. Heavier objects are actually easier.
Group Size: 6-10 students is ideal. Too few is too easy; too many is chaos.
Facilitation Scripts
To start the challenge:
"Everyone, extend your index fingers. The stick will rest on your fingernails. You cannot hook your finger or grab the stick. We must lower it until it touches the grass/floor."
When it starts rising:
"Stop! Freeze! Look at where the stick is. Is it going down or up? Why do you think it is going up even though we want it to go down?"
Success Metrics:
1st graders might not get the stick to the ground on the first (or fifth) try. Success looks like:
Quiet voices or absolute silence.
Group laughter (positive release) followed by refocus.
Recognizing that rushing makes it float faster.

Mission Gear
Cargo Bin A
20 soft balls, 10 cones, 5 bean bags.
Cargo Bin B
An empty bin located 20-30 feet away.
Phase 1: Individual Effort
Tell students they must move all equipment from A to B. Rule: You can only carry ONE item at a time. Time the class as they run back and forth.
Observe: High energy, lots of collisions, slow overall pace.
Phase 2: The Team System
Huddle the team. Ask: "How can we do this without running so much?" Lead them to the idea of a passing line (Bucket Brigade).
Observe: Calm energy, communication, significantly faster time.
Leader Tips:
The Dropped Cargo: If a team drops an item, the person who dropped it must count to 3 before picking it up (simulating a 'spill').
Spacing: Ensure 1st graders aren't too far apart. They should be able to hand off the item comfortably without throwing.
Variety: If they master the line, give them "unusually shaped cargo" (like a long pool noodle or a heavy medicine ball).

The Culminating Quest
This scavenger hunt isn't about finding items, it's about finding puzzles . At each station, teams must prove they can work together to earn a puzzle piece. Once they have all pieces, they assemble a final message or key.
Station Setup
1
The Shrinking Island
Equipment: A 2x2 foot square of tape on the floor. Challenge: Fit the whole team inside for 10 seconds.
2
The Magic River
Equipment: 4 polyspots. Challenge: Cross a 15-foot gap using the "passing the rocks" method.
3
The Supply Run
Equipment: 5 balls, 1 bin. Challenge: Move balls from start to the bin using a bucket brigade passing line.
The Puzzle Pieces
Print a secret word (e.g., "TEAMWORK") on a piece of paper and cut it into 3 irregular pieces. Give one piece per station completed.
Treasure Idea: Explorer stickers, a "Team Diploma," or a few minutes of free play.
Your Role
You are the "Master Explorer." You don't give answers, you only verify that they completed the challenge with kindness and focus . If you see arguing, the "puzzle pieces" go back in your pocket!
