The TPR Strategy
Total Physical Response (TPR) works by linking language directly to movement. Avoid translating! If a student looks confused, simply model the action again while saying the Mandarin phrase.
DO
Exaggerate your movements.
Use a high-energy "game show" voice.
Repeat the same phrase 10+ times.
DON'T
Say "Stand up means..."
Test them with flashcards yet.
Worry about perfect pronunciation.
Instructional Flow

The Hook (2 mins)
Gather students on the rug. Tell them today we are joining the "Action Academy" and we need to wake up our "Mandarin Ears."

Modeling (5 mins)
Say "Zhàn qǐ lái!" and spring up with hands in the air. Say "Zuò xià!" and sit down quickly. Have students copy you. Repeat 5 times slowly, then 5 times fast.

The Popcorn Game (10 mins)
Students are "popcorn kernels." Call out the commands in random order. Try to trick them by saying "Zuò xià" while they are already sitting! Use the speed challenge slide to increase intensity.
