Kickoff Passage: From Ancient Feathers to Global Glory
Did you know soccer is thousands of years old? More than 2,000 years ago during the Han Dynasty in ancient China, soldiers played a game called Cuju (which means "kick ball with foot"). Players kicked a leather ball stuffed with feathers into a small silk net hanging between bamboo poles. In ancient Rome, athletes played Harpastum, another lively ball-kicking game!
For centuries, different towns made up their own wild rules. But in 1863, representatives from English clubs met at the Freemasons' Tavern in London to write down the official universal rules so everyone could play fairly. They formed the Football Association (FA). The nickname "soccer" comes from a shortened slang form of the word "association"!
In 1930, the very first FIFA Men's World Cup took place in Uruguay, with the host country lifting the trophy. Sixty-one years later, in 1991, the first FIFA Women's World Cup kicked off in China, where the United States Women's National Team claimed victory. Today, people in more than 200 countries play soccer!
