The Spanish Contrast
Spanish has only five vowel sounds. The Spanish "i" is high and tense, almost identical to the English Long e (as in seat ). English Short i (as in sit ) does not exist in Spanish.
Common Pitfalls
Students often say "sheep" when they mean "ship" . The goal is to move from "tense/smiling" (Long e) to "relaxed/dropped" (Short i).

The Mirror Muscle Check
Long e - "The Smile"
Corners of the mouth pull back. Tongue is high and tense. Signal: Wide smile.
Short i - "The Relax"
Jaw drops slightly. Tongue drops and muscles relax. Signal: Relaxed hand drop.

Long e: Pull the rubber band wide and tight. Feel the tension!Short i: Hold the rubber band loosely or let it go limp. Keep it loose!

Teacher Tip: Spanish speakers naturally use the "Smiling Sound" for all i's. Encourage them to find the "Relaxed Sound" for words like ship .
