If Your Site Leans Heavy K–2
For pre-readers, emerging writers, and tactile learners:
Use the Junior Critic Sheet: Large smiley-face ratings (Yum, Okay, Yuck) and drawing boxes instead of heavy writing.
Dot Sticker Voting: Give kids green dot stickers (clean plate) and red dot stickers (tossed in trash) to place directly on the wall calendar.
Physical Scribing: Have staff circulate with clipboards to write exact quotes: "Too sour," "Too hard to open," etc.
Sensory Prompts: Ask: "Was it crunchy or squishy?" "Was the milk cold or warm?"
Key Rule: Keep sessions to 10–15 mins max; focus on visual choices and show-of-hands.
If Your Site Leans Heavy 3–5
For independent readers, critical thinkers, and student leaders:
Use Showdown Activity Sheet: Youth complete the 2-page detailed critique, category showdown, and dream combo builder.
Peer Critic Interviews: Have students pair up as food reviewers and interview each other on texture, temperature, and satisfaction.
The "Remix" Pitch: Challenge older kids to propose realistic solutions (e.g. "Add Tajín to celery" or "Serve pretzels with cheese dip" ).
Satiety & Fuel Focus: Discuss which snacks actually hold them over until dinner or through active recreation time.
Key Rule: Run the 20–30 min council workshop; appoint table spokespersons to pitch ideas.
How to Package Data for Your Nutrition Department
Food Service Directors operate under strict USDA guidelines (CACFP / NSLP smart snacks), vendor bid cycles, and budget limits. To ensure they act on your feedback:
1. Identify Specific SKUs
Don't just write "crackers bad." Specify: "Sunflower crackers are repeatedly left unopened (70% waste)."
2. Highlight Packaging & Temp
Note if fruit arrived bruised or if K-1 kids could not open sealed plastic cups without staff tearing them.
3. Propose 1:1 Compliant Swaps
Suggest swaps in the same USDA component category (e.g. swap plain saltine for whole-grain Goldfish or pita chip).
Next Step for Site Directors:
Complete the Nutrition Department Feedback Memo within 48 hours of your activity and email to your Food Service Specialist.
