Net-Zero Heroes Lesson Plan Net-Zero Heroes
PE Strategy & Cooperative Play
7th Grade
Duration: 60 Minutes
Objective
Students will demonstrate effective court positioning and transitional movement in net-based sports to maintain a continuous cooperative rally of at least 10 hits.
SHAPE Standards
S1.M16.7: Transitions from offense to defense or defense to offense by recovering quickly.
S2.M1.7: Reduces open space on defense by staying on the "balls of the feet."
Equipment Needs
Volleyballs or Pickleball sets
Floor Tape / Flat Markers
Net-Zero Slides & Projector
Lesson Sequence
0-10m
Warm-Up: Shadow Shuffles
Students practice lateral shuffles following directional cues. Focus on "Active Hands" (up and ready) and "Communication Bursts" where the whole class shouts "MINE!" on a whistle blow to build volume confidence.
10-25m
Direct Instruction: The "W" Formation
Explain the "W" positioning (for 5 players) or the "Staggered Triangle" (for 3 players). Key technical cues:
The Apex: The center-back player controls the middle-deep space.
The Pivot: After hitting, the player must return to their "Home base" marker within 2 seconds.
The "V" Gap: Watch for the space between the front-left and center-back—this is the target "Dead Zone."
25-50m
The Zone Defense Challenge
Detailed in Activity Guide
Teams of 3-4 protect 4 taped zones. Introduce the "Chain Reaction" rule: When one player moves to cover a ball, the other two must rotate to fill the vacancy. Failure to rotate results in a "Free Zone" for the opposing side's next serve.
50-60m
Cool Down: Court Commander Reflection
Distribute worksheets. Students must physically trace their "most common movement path" on the diagram, identifying if they stayed in one spot or successfully "hustled" to cover gaps.
Pro-Tips
Correction Cues
"Don't be a statue!" — if a student is watching the ball without adjusting their feet. "Eyes on the seams!" — to focus on the gaps between teammates.
Safety
Ensure all tape markers are flat to prevent tripping. Remind students that communication prevents "head-on collisions" when two people go for the same ball.

The Mission
The Objective
Work as a team to eliminate dead space and keep the rally alive for 10+ hits.
Key Focus
1 Transitional Movement
2 Verbal Cues (Talk!)
Avoid "No-Man's Land"
Why do rallies die? Because of the "Middle Trap."
The Dead Zone
The Mistake
Standing too deep or too shallow, leaving a massive gap in the center of the court.
The Result
"Look-and-Drop" — Teammates look at each other while the ball hits the floor between them.
Talk the Game
"MINE!"
Claim the ball early. Be loud and confident.
"YOURS!"
Direct your teammate if you can't reach it.
"IN / OUT!"
Help your teammates judge the court lines.
The Recovery Pivot
Never stand still after hitting the ball.

Center Recovery
1
Step & Hit: Explode toward the ball as soon as it crosses the net.
2
Pivot: Keep your eyes on the ball, but turn your body toward center-court.

The Court Setup
Divide your half of the court into 4 distinct zones using floor tape or flat markers. Each zone must be covered by at least one foot of a teammate at all times before a hit.

Right-Front

Winning Conditions
Complete a 10-hit rally without the ball touching the floor.
Every hit must be preceded by a loud verbal cue ("MINE!").
The Penalties
Ball hits floor in an empty zone = 5 Jumping Jacks.
Two people in one zone = 3 Burpees for the team.
Activity Sequence
1
Stationary Start
Stand in your designated zones. Toss the ball within your group and focus on calling "MINE" and "YOURS" while keeping one foot in your zone.
2
The Transitional Shuffle
Once the ball is hit, the player must switch zones with a teammate. This forces the team to constantly look at open spaces and fill them.
3
Full Net-Zero Game
Combine groups to play across the net. Focus is on cooperative play—the goal is NOT to score, but to maintain the longest rally while rotating zones.
Debrief Questions for Teachers
"Which zone was the hardest to cover while moving?"
"How did your communication change as the rally got longer?"
