01 // The Emotional Rollercoaster Page 2
Are Your Emotions In Control?
Teenage life can feel like an emotional roller coaster. Stress, anger, frustration, and worry are natural reactions to pressure—whether in school, sports, or relationships.
⚠️ The Risk Zone
Many people turn to unhealthy coping mechanisms (like substances, avoidance, or aggression) to numb heavy emotions. Today, we build active alternatives.
The Performance Connection
Unmanaged Anger: Blurs focus, spikes heart rate, and causes errors on the field.
High Chronic Stress: Tightens muscles, fatigues the body quickly, and slows down recovery.
Mental Resilience: The ultimate athletic weapon. It allows you to calm your system in a second.

02 // Defining Triggers Page 3
Vocabulary Alert
TRIGGER
A situation, person, place, or thing that causes a sudden, intense emotional response.
Type 1
Social Triggers
Being blamed for a teammate's error, harsh group criticism, rumors, or feeling excluded.
Type 2
Performance Triggers
Making a crucial game error, getting a bad grade, drop in stamina, or physical fatigue.
Type 3
Environmental Triggers
Unfair rules, referee's calls, cramped locker spaces, loud environments, or rainy conditions.

👉 What is one trigger that spiked your emotions this week?
03 // Your Defense Strategies Page 4
Centering
Focusing and settling the physical effects of high-stress and surging adrenaline.
Deep, structured belly breathing
Grounding techniques (5-4-3-2-1 check)
Positive visual imagery of success
🎯 Target: Slow down heart rate & relax tight muscles
Re-Framing
Changing how you evaluate a negative trigger by checking your brain's interpretation.
Reality Check: Is this response realistic?
Double Standard: Talk to yourself like a friend
Past Experience: How did I successfully manage this before?
🧠 Target: Stop extreme thoughts before they ruin focus

Both techniques work together like a physical block and quick pivot.
04 // Cognitive Distortions Page 5
Is Your Brain Playing Tricks on You?
Sometimes our minds default to "cognitive distortions"—exaggerated or irrational thought patterns that blow triggers out of proportion. Here are three common ones:
1
All-or-Nothing
Seeing things in absolute black and white. "If I make one mistake, the whole game is ruined and I'm a failure."
💡 Refremediary: "A bad play is just one moment. I can recover on the next run."
2
Catastrophizing
Taking a minor slip and blowing it into an absolute disaster. "If I miss this shot, nobody will ever pass to me again."
💡 Refremediary: "It's just one missed shot. Teammates make mistakes too."
3
Mind Reading
Assuming you know exactly what others are thinking about you. "The coach didn't look at me, so they must think I am terrible."
💡 Refremediary: "Coach is focusing on planning. I'll show my work by executing hard."

Quick Stress Relief Tactics
This clip outlines how immediate physical reactions (sweating, racing pulse) are triggered by stress, and how targeted physical resets send instant counter-signals to your brain.
Discussion Sparkers:
Q1
Which physical stress symptom do you feel first?
Q2
Can a quick sprint clear a heavy head? Why?

Gameplay Stressors
Apply centering or reframing strategies in real-time during your active game situations.
1. What game stressor did you experience? (e.g., missed point, referee call)
2. Which strategy (Centering, Reframing, or Power Venting) did you implement?
3. How did this action affect your performance and interaction with teammates?

Core Objectives & Standards
This lesson is designed to be delivered in either a gymnasium or standard classroom. Both tracks emphasize identical self-regulation strategies (centering & reframing).
• Physical: Execute planks and explosive slams (Gym) OR progressive muscle contraction/releases (Classroom).
• Cognitive: Map out and identify "brain tricks" (cognitive distortions) and apply reframing questions.
• Social-Emotional: Constructively navigate frustration without resorting to substances or avoidance.
Equipment Checklist for Both Tracks
Track A: Gym Stations Gear
• 4 large cones & 8 yoga mats
• 4-6 slam balls & shuttle sprint indicators
• Printed copies of Gym Stations Worksheet
• Pack of "Brain Trick" Scenario Cards
Track B: Classroom Shield Gear
• Printed copies of Mind Shield Activity
• Small tactile desk items (pencils, rubbers, rulers)
• Whiteboard or digital slides display
• Stopwatch/timer for muscle squeezing drills
Comparative Pacing Blueprints
Track A: Gym Circuit (45m)
00-10m: Gym whiteboard trigger briefing (Slides 1-5)
10-35m: Rotate teams through Gym Stations 1 to 4
35-45m: Core cool down debrief & workout log checks
Track B: Classroom Desk (45m)
00-12m: Video viewing & cognitive distortion intro
12-32m: Mind Shield Layers 1-2 (Breathing & Scenarios)

MIND SHIELD PRACTICE
PART 1
Student Name
Class Period
Date
You don't need a gymnasium to manage high-stress moments. Your Mind Shield is a three-layer mental and physical defense plan you can practice right at your desk to calm your body and reframe stressful thoughts.
LAYER 1
Sensory Box Breathing
Desktop Focus
Inhale deeply for 4 seconds, hold for 4 seconds, exhale for 4 seconds, and hold for 4 seconds. While breathing, pick one quiet object on your desk (a pencil texture, the page edge, or a desk surface) and focus your entire sensory attention on it.
1. Describe the tactile feel or visual details of the object you chose:
2. What physical shifts did you notice in your hands or chest while focusing on it?
LAYER 2
Cognitive Re-Framing
Thought Triage
We often experience exaggerations or "brain tricks" (cognitive distortions) during high-pressure school tasks. Complete Scenario A below:
Scenario A Trick: All-or-Nothing Thinking
Trigger: You make a mistake on the first question of a major math exam, and think: "The whole test is a disaster. I'm going to fail this entire class."
Apply "Reality Check" Reframe (How can you rewrite this logically?):

MIND SHIELD PRACTICE
PART 2
Cognitive Re-Framing (Continued)
Scenario B Trick: Mind Reading
Trigger: You raise your hand to speak in class, stumble on a word, and think: "Everyone is laughing inside and thinks I am completely foolish."
Apply "Double Standard" Reframe (What would you tell a close friend in this spot?):
LAYER 3
Quiet Desktop Micro-Movements
Quiet Stress Release
Stress causes physical tension automatically. Practice this quiet, desk-friendly movement: Progressive Muscle Squeezing (tighten your foot and fist muscles tightly for 5 seconds, then slowly release them completely).
Muscle Tension Log:
Where did you feel the tension build up in your body when you were stressed (shoulders, hands, jaw)?
Release Feedback:
What physical change did you notice in your posture or muscles once you completed the quiet release?
Personal Application
