Objective
Students will analyze how optical illusions and perspective function in 3D art. They will apply these concepts to design and construct original sculptures that manipulate viewer perception through forced perspective, anamorphic distortion, or negative space.

Sometimes, this empty space forms an entirely new image that your brain has to "decipher."

Forced Perspective: Capture the Illusion!

Set Up Your Booth
Ensure good lighting and an uncluttered backdrop. Shadows should not give away the secret!

The "Sweet Spot"
Find the primary viewing angle. Looking through the camera lens is different than looking with two eyes!

Scale Shift
Tiny: Place sculpture far away, stand close.
Giant: Place sculpture close, stand far behind it.

Align and Overlap
Carefully align objects in the frame to make them look like they are touching or interacting.

Experiment
Take 10+ shots. Shift your camera up, down, left, and right by tiny amounts until it "clicks."

Select the Winner
Choose the one photo where the illusion is most undeniable. This is your exhibit piece.

Display a famous 2D or 3D illusion. Teams have 30 seconds to discuss: "Is it flat? How does it fool us?"
Round 2
Sculpture Showcase
Students present their own work. Other teams must analyze the specific tricks (e.g., negative space, forced perspective) being used.
Round 3
The "Sweet Spot" Challenge
Show an anamorphic object from a "wrong" angle. Teams guess what it really is and where the viewer should stand.
The "Perception" Prompt Bank
"Is your brain seeing what's there , or what it expects to see?"
"Where is the negative space in this object, and does it create a second shape?"
"How does the scale of the background object compare to the foreground object?"
