Market Grammar Review & Practice

Grammar Focus: Prepositions, Partitives & Quantities

1 Prepositions of Location: Where Are You Going? (À la vs. Chez)

Core Rule

• Use à la / au / à l' before a store building / place.
• Use chez when referring to a person, artisan, or professional.

Place / Store Name:

  • • à la boulangerie / pâtisserie / boucherie
  • • au supermarché / au marché
  • • à l' épicerie (starts with a vowel)

Person / Profession (Chez):

  • • chez le boucher (the butcher)
  • • chez le boulanger (the baker)
  • • chez le primeur (the greengrocer)

2 Partitive Articles: Expressing "Some" (Du, De la, De l', Des)

Unspecified Quantity

When requesting an unspecified portion of food, use the partitive article matching gender and number:

du Masculine sing. du fromage

de la Feminine sing. de la viande

de l' Before vowel/silent h de l'eau

des Plural (m. & f.) des fraises

Negative Rule: In negative sentences, all partitives become de / d'! (Je ne veux pas de poisson.)

3 Precise Quantities + "de / d'" (The "No Article" Rule)

Measured Amounts

When an exact measurement or container is specified, the partitive article disappears and is replaced by de (or d' before vowels):

• un kilo de pommes

• 500 grammes de beurre

• une tranche de jambon

• un morceau de fromage

• une bouteille d' eau

• un paquet de pâtes

Section 4: Grammar Quick-Check Practice Drills

3. Je voudrais ( du / de la / des ) ____________________ saumon frais, s'il vous plaît. Partitives

4. Nous achetons ( du / de la / des ) ____________________ pommes rouges chez le primeur. Partitives

5. Donnez-moi un kilo ( de / du ) ____________________ carottes bien fraîches. Quantities
