Forever Smiles Lesson Plan
Unit Focus Adult Teeth & Dental Care
Big Goal
Understand that adult teeth are permanent ("once-in-a-lifetime") and need daily protection.
Core Concepts
Baby teeth fall out; adult teeth stay for life. Enamel shields our teeth from sugar bugs.
Materials Needed
Tooth puppet or giant brush, apple slice, mirror, Super Choppers worksheets, crayons.
Student Learning Objectives (I Can Statements)
• Identify difference: I can tell the difference between temporary baby teeth and permanent adult teeth.
• Explain importance: I can explain why adult teeth cannot grow back if they get damaged or lost.
• Describe functions: I can name how teeth help us chew food, speak clearly, and smile proudly.
• Commit to care: I can name 3 healthy habits (brush 2 min, floss, eat crunchy fruits/water).
1 Circle Time Hook: The Wiggle Story & Smile Check
8 Minutes
Prompt: "Touch your chin! Who here has lost a tooth or has a wiggly one right now?" Let 2–3 students share.
Key Discussion: "When baby teeth wiggle out, a shiny new secret is hiding underneath in your gums! What comes next? Your grown-up adult teeth! Baby teeth are like training wheels on your bicycle. But adult teeth are the real two-wheeler bicycle you keep forever!"
2 Mini-Lesson: The Forever Tooth Truth
12 Minutes
Teach the two biggest differences between baby teeth (primary) and adult teeth (permanent):
1. The "No Backup Plan" Rule
Sharks grow new teeth forever, but humans only get ONE set of adult teeth. If an adult tooth breaks or rots, no new tooth will ever sprout!
2. The 3 Tooth Superpowers
Crunching: Chewing yummy food. Talking: Helping our tongue say "S", "Th", and "F". Smiling: Expressing happiness!

3 Hands-On Demo: The Apple & The Armor (Enamel)
10 Minutes
Show an unpeeled apple next to a peeled apple slice.
Demonstration Steps:
The Skin is Like Enamel: Explain that the shiny red skin on an apple protects the soft white fruit inside, just like enamel protects our teeth.
What Happens Without Armor: Leave the peeled apple out. Point out how it turns brown and soft when the protective skin is missing.
Sugar Bugs: Explain that sugar and germs love to eat through our enamel armor when we don't brush away sticky food.
4 Guided Practice: Super Choppers Activity Sheet
12 Minutes
Distribute the 2-page Super Choppers Activity Sheet . Guide students through each section:
Page 1: Tooth Match & Sorting
Students sort baby teeth facts versus adult teeth facts, then connect tooth super-tools to their everyday jobs.
Page 2: Tooth Armor & Care Pledge
Students color the enamel shield, circle tooth-defending habits, and sign their daily tooth care pledge.
Differentiation Supports
Support (K / Emerging Readers): Read aloud questions as a whole group; use color coding (red for baby teeth, blue for adult teeth); peer buddy support.
Extension (Grade 1–2): Have students write a 2-sentence letter to their future adult teeth promising how they will protect them every day.
Common Misconceptions
Myth: "If my adult tooth falls out, another one grows in like baby teeth do."
Teacher Correction: Re-emphasize: adult teeth are the FINAL set! There is no third set underneath.
Myth: "Teeth are made of bone."
Teacher Correction: Explain that enamel is actually even harder than bone, but cannot heal itself like bones do!
