Language, Not Codes
ASL Club Introduction
• Real & Complete
ASL is a distinct, robust, natural language with its own complex rules of grammar, sentence structure, and history.
• Visual-Spatial
Unlike spoken English, ASL uses hand shapes, facial expressions, body movement, and physical space to communicate meaning.
Myth Buster!
ASL is NOT English on the hands. It is not a word-for-word translation, and it is not universally understood worldwide!
American Sign Language has rich roots linked with French Sign Language (LSF). Slide 2 of 8
Eyes Open, Hands Up
Culture & Etiquette
Eye Contact
Looking away is equivalent to covering your ears! Always maintain steady, respectful eye contact.
Attention
Need attention? Wave gently in their line of sight, or tap their shoulder lightly 1-2 times. No poking!
Voice Off
In Deaf spaces or during ASL practice, keep your voice completely silent to respect visual culture.
Respect the culture and you will succeed. Slide 3 of 8
Golden Rules of Fingerspelling
Mechanics & Practice
1
Pick Your Hand
Use your dominant hand for spelling and stick with it. Do not switch back and forth.
2
Anchor Your Elbow
Keep your elbow relaxed, tucked gently near your ribcage. Don't float your arm around.
3
Spelling Window
Hold your signing hand slightly to the side of your chin/shoulder. Don't cover your face!
4
Clarity > Speed
Slow, clear, rhythmic spelling is 100x easier to read than lightning-fast, sloppy signing. No bouncing!
Keep a steady beat, like your heart. Slide 4 of 8

Peace fingers up. Place your thumb tip on index knuckle.
L The Corner
A literal "L" shape. Index straight up, thumb straight out.
M Three Humps
Fold three fingers over the thumb, resting on your palm.
N Two Humps
Fold index & middle fingers over the thumb. Hide pinky/ring.
O Perfect O
Touch all fingers together at the tips to make a circular O.
P Drooping K
Shape a "K", but flip your wrist down so fingers point groundward.
Q Drooping G
Shape a "G", but turn wrist down to point pinch-fingers down.
R Crossed
Cross index and middle fingers tightly (like "good luck").
Notice the relationship: K/P are paired, and G/Q are paired! Slide 6 of 8

Fingerspelling Rules of the Road
Fingerspelling is a core part of ASL used for names, places, brands, and words that don't have a formal sign. Master these habits early!
Dominant Hand: Keep your spelling hand active and steady; use your secondary hand strictly for support.
No Bouncing: Maintain a steady, level position. Don't push or bob your hand with every letter.
The Window: Place your spelling hand right beside your chin or collarbone. Keep your face fully visible.
Oops Method: Made a mistake? Don't shake or erase your hand. Just pause, reset, and start spelling the word again.
