Festival Canvas Teacher Guide Spanish Culture & Language
Festival Canvas
Collaborative Calendar & Cultural Exploration Project
Grades: 4–8 (Elementary/Middle)
Duration: 2–3 Sessions (120 mins)
Format: Print & Illustrate
Lesson Overview
In this creative project-based lesson, students explore Spanish-speaking cultural celebrations while mastering essential calendar vocabulary (months, dates, and seasons) and basic descriptive writing. Working collaboratively, each student designs and writes a dedicated calendar page representing a specific festival (e.g., Día de los Muertos , Las Fallas , or Inti Raymi ). The individual pages are then assembled into a class-wide illustrated calendar.

Identify and spell the 12 Spanish months and key dates.
Write calendar dates using the proper formula: el [número] de [mes] .
Describe weather and traditional practices of a target festival.
Create an original, culturally authentic artistic representation.

Instructional Flow
Step-by-step facilitation guide for sessions 1, 2, and 3
1
Engage & Explore: Cultural Hook (15 mins)
Show the Festival Canvas Slide Deck . Lead a discussion about how cultural events are linked to seasons and dates. Introduce vocabulary for months and weather, modeling proper pronunciation. Have students practice choral repetition of the target phrases.
2
Guided Vocabulary Practice: Date Formula (20 mins)
Write several milestone dates on the board (e.g., Christmas, Halloween, Mexican Independence). Model the standard Spanish syntax: "Hoy es el [número] de [mes]" . Have students write down three important dates in their personal lives (birthdays, family holidays) on mini-whiteboards.
3
Festival Assignment & Brainstorming (25 mins)
Distribute the Festival Canvas Activity Sheet . Assign or let students choose from the curated festival list (ensure all 12 months are covered for a complete calendar!). Students research or use notes to complete the vocabulary planner and draft their descriptive Spanish paragraph.
4
The Collaborative Canvas: Production (40 mins)
Provide students with cardstock. Instruct them to draw a vibrant cultural scene at the top (incorporating traditional symbols, colors, and items) and format the calendar grid for their assigned month at the bottom. Below the grid, they transcribe their finalized descriptive paragraph in clear handwriting.
5
Calendar Showcase & Assessment (20 mins)
Line up the pages in chronological order (Enero to Diciembre). Have students perform a "Gallery Walk." Each student shares one fact about their festival using the target vocabulary. Use the Festival Canvas Rubric to assess linguistic accuracy and creative presentation.
Differentiation Strategies
Scaffolded Support (Lower Grades)
Provide starter sentences for the descriptive paragraph (e.g., "El festival es en..." , "Hace..." ). Pre-print calendar number grids so students only need to write month names and illustrations.
Advanced Extensions (Middle School)
Require students to write 3-4 compound sentences in Spanish detailing why the celebration occurs and identifying 3 specific traditional objects shown in their art.
