Why It Matters
Understanding the holistic benefits of exercise encourages students to move beyond seeing fitness as just "gym class" and start viewing it as a vital tool for mental health and stress management.
Lesson Procedure
10 min
Introduction & Hook
Open the slides. Facilitate a brief discussion on what students already know about exercise. Ask: "How do you feel after a long walk versus sitting at a desk all day?" Focus on mood and energy levels.
15 min
"The Pulse Check" Activity
Lead students in a quick physical activity (brisk walking, stretching, or high-knees). Immediately after, have students sit quietly for 1 minute to notice changes in their heart rate, breathing, and alertness.
15 min
Benefits Deep Dive
Use the Discussion Guide Cards . Cover physical benefits (cardio, strength) and mental benefits (cortisol reduction, endorphin release, cognitive focus).
10 min
Benefit Identification
Students complete the Exercise Benefits Worksheet independently. This allows them to internalize which benefits matter most to their personal lives.
10 min
Goal-Setting Activity
Hand out Goal-Setting Cards . Students draft one physical and one mental health goal. Encourage them to be realistic and specific.
5 min
Wrap Up
Recap key points. Invite volunteers to share one goal. Remind them that exercise isn't just about how we look, but how we function and feel .
