Learning Outcomes
- Vocabulary: Accurately name 8 common classroom supplies with correct grammatical gender.
- Interpersonal Speaking: Ask peers « Tu as [objet] ? » with rising intonation and answer affirmatively (« Oui, j'ai... ») or politely in the negative (« Non, désolé(e), je n'ai pas de... »).
Instructional Pacing (55 min breakdown)
1. Hook & "Le Sac Mystère" Warm-Up 10 min
Hold up an opaque pencil case or backpack. Pull out items one at a time (pencil, ruler, eraser). State each name with enthusiastic vocal emphasis: « Regardez ! Un crayon ! ». Have students mirror back choral pronunciations twice.
2. Slide Presentation & Physical Response 15 min
Project slides 2–6. Teach the bodily gesture: tap your right shoulder for masculine (un) and your left shoulder for feminine (une). Model the question « Tu as un stylo ? » and drill the two responses: thumbs up for « Oui, j'ai... », apologetic hand gesture for « Non, désolé(e)... ».
3. Guided Practice & Written Packet 12 min
Distribute the 2-page Student Activity Packet. Students independently complete Part 1 (Vocabulary Identification), Part 2 (Gender Detective), and Part 3 (Dialogue Builder). Circulate and check gender accuracy.
4. Communicative Speaking Survey (Trouve Quelqu'un) 13 min
Students stand with their packets and real pencil cases. They circulate to ask 4 peers: « Tu as un/une... ? ». Classmates physically produce the item or respond politely. Students log responses in their table.
5. Cool-Down & Oral Exit Ticket 5 min
Before leaving, the teacher holds up one supply to each student as they exit. The student asks the teacher: « Tu as un / une ... ? » or responds to a quick prompt from the teacher.
Teacher Coaching & Common Beginner Misconceptions
1. Negation rule (de): In French, after « je n'ai pas », un/une changes to « de » (e.g., je n'ai pas de crayon). Praise students who remember , but allow without penalty for timid beginners.
