Investigating Movement and Energy
Today's Mission
01
Discover how different movements "charge" or "drain" our body battery.
02
Track our heart rate and energy levels after three different stations.
03
Analyze which activities help us feel focused, calm, or energetic.
What is a "Body Battery"?
Just like a phone, your body has an internal battery.
Some things charge it (sleep, healthy food, rest).
Some things use it (running, learning, stress).
Question: How do you feel when your battery is at 10%?
Station 1: Power Surge
7 MINUTES
High Intensity!
30 seconds: Running in Place
30 seconds: Jumping Jacks
Repeat until the whistle!
Observation Goal:
Pay attention to your heart rate. Is it thumping? Is your breathing getting faster?
Station 2: Power Flow
7 MINUTES
Flexibility & Focus
Slow Reach: Touch your toes
The Tree: Balance on one leg
Sky Reach: Stretch your arms
Observation Goal:
How do your muscles feel? Do you feel more or less alert than before?
Station 3: Power Reset
7 MINUTES
Deep Breathing
Sit comfortably and close eyes
Breathe in for 4 seconds
Breathe out for 6 seconds
Observation Goal:
Does your battery feel like it's recharging? How is your heart rate now?

Lesson Overview
Students will act as "Energy Scientists" to explore how high-intensity movement, stretching, and deep breathing impact their internal "Body Battery." The lesson uses a rotation-based format to allow students to experience and record physiological and psychological changes in real-time.
Equipment Needed
1 Logbook per student
Whistle or timer
Pencils/Pens
Projector for slides
Floor mats (optional)
3 designated station areas
Key Vocabulary
Heart Rate
How many times your heart beats per minute.
Intensity
The amount of effort or energy used during activity.
Mindfulness
Being fully present and aware of how your body feels.
Lesson Timeline
00-08 min
Introduction (Slides 1-3)
Introduce the "Body Battery" concept. Have students fill out their "Baseline Status" in the Lab Logbook before any movement begins.
08-35 min
Station Rotations (Slides 4-6)
Each station: 7 minutes activity + 2 minutes recording data.
Station 1 (Power Surge): High aerobic intensity. Focus on rapid heart rate change.
Station 2 (Power Flow): Dynamic stretching. Focus on physical sensation and alertness.
Station 3 (Power Reset): Controlled breathing. Focus on mental clarity and heart rate recovery.
35-45 min
Reflection & Conclusion (Slide 7)
Students complete the "Lab Conclusion" section. Lead a group discussion on which movements "charged" their battery vs. which "used" it.
Pro-Tips for Success
Setting the Mood
Use music to signal the station intensity. Upbeat, fast music for Station 1; slow, acoustic music for Station 2; and ambient/nature sounds for Station 3.
Pulse Checking
If students struggle to find their pulse, have them put their hand over their heart or use a "2-finger carotid check" on the neck. Remind them it's about the feeling , not the exact number.
Space Management
If your room is small, have students stay at their desks for the activities but "rotate" their focus. If in a gym, set up physical cones for each "Lab Station."
The "Why"
Key Takeaway: High energy is great for sports, but we need "Power Reset" movements to help us focus for math or reading!
