Investigating the Hidden Forces Behind Our Food Choices
GRADE LEVEL 6th - 12th
Duration
60 - 90 Minutes
Group Format
6 Groups of 5 Students
Activity Style
Hands-On Inquiry Rotation
Learning Objectives
- Identify the biological, social, psychological, environmental, and economic influences on dietary decisions.
- Analyze real-world food scenarios to infer dietary behaviors and lifestyle challenges.
- Formulate practical strategies to navigate and overcome barriers to healthy food selection.
The Food Choice Framework
1. Physical & Biological
Hunger cues, nutritional requirements, genetics, medical restrictions (e.g., allergies, diabetes).
2. Social & Psychological
Peer pressure, mood, advertising/marketing, traditions, cultural heritage, and celebrations.
3. Economic & Environmental
Budget limitations, physical accessibility (food deserts), preparation time, cooking skills, and kitchen equipment.
Mystery Bag Setup & Assembly
Gather 6 medium paper shopping bags (labeled 1 to 6). Place the printed Prompt Cards on the outside of each bag. Place the physical props inside the bags. Students will look inside to analyze the clues:
Bag 1: Grocery store circular, generic brand empty box, coupon clipping, budget list.
Bag 2: Instant soup wrapper, energy drink can, sticky note: "Review starts in 10m!"
Bag 3: Clean shaker cup, high-protein label mockup, athletic tape, fitness logbook.
Bag 4: Mockup of mobile screen with viral cooking clip, colorful snack box.
Bag 5: Traditional spice shaker, grandma's handwritten recipe card, holiday calendar invitation.
Bag 6: Gluten-free packaging cutout, medical chart mockup, cross-contamination checklist.

Session Outline
Suggested Lesson Pacing
00 - 10 Minutes: The Hook (The "Why We Eat" Brainstorm)
Ask: "Why did you choose the last meal you ate?" Note responses on the board. Group them into economic, social, biological, or convenience buckets without naming them yet.
10 - 45 Minutes: Pantry Profiling Rotations
Divide students into 6 groups. Explain they are "Pantry Profilers" investigating 6 different characters based on physical clues left in mystery bags. Rotate groups every 5 minutes.
45 - 60 Minutes: Group Debrief & Discussion
Bring the class together. Go through each profile and reveal the target influences. Discuss how these factors shape daily decisions and how we can advocate for healthier environments.
Profile Analysis & Answer Key

|---|
| Bag 1 | The Budget Balancer | Economic / Cost | How do price limits affect access to fresh food? |
| Bag 2 | The Midnight Crammer | Convenience / Time | How does late-night stress affect hunger cues? |
| Bag 3 | The Gym Crusader | Physical Goals / Health | Are high-protein mockups always healthier choices? |
| Bag 4 | The Trend Chaser | Social Media / Marketing | How does packaging design manipulate desires? |
| Bag 5 | The Heritage Feast | Culture / Family | Why are food memory connections so strong? |
| Bag 6 | The Label Reader | Physical / Medical Alert | How does allergy awareness change dining out? |
Facilitation & Questioning Guidance
Promote critical thinking: If a group is stuck on a bag, prompt them: "What feels like the primary driver of this person's decision? Is it budget, a medical restriction, social media trends, or cultural custom?" Ask students to distinguish between food preference (what they want) and food access (what they can actually obtain).
