Lesson Concept & Objectives
Why do we eat what we eat? Food choice is a complex web of cultural, psychological, economic, environmental, and physical factors. In this detective-style activity, students rotate through 6 mystery stations , analyzing a pouch of "real-world clues" (receipts, calendar invites, maps, text chains) to deduce exactly which factor is driving that character's nutritional decision.
Mission Objectives: (1) Uncover Drivers: Analyze how internal feelings (emotions, biology) and external forces (budget, social circles, marketing, time) guide food choices. (2) Decode Evidence: Interrogate real-world clues to build a case for each suspect. (3) Take Control: Plan smart strategies to actively navigate everyday food temptations.
Materials Needed
6 brown paper bags labeled #1 to #6.
Activity Cards cut out and placed in bags.
Student Packets printed (1 per student).
Rapid Prep Steps
Print & Cut: Print and cut clue cards for Bags 1-6.
Assemble Bags: Place clue sheets inside 6 separate paper bags.

Hook & Quick Introduction
Ask students: "Why did you choose your breakfast or lunch today?" List quick answers on the board (e.g., 'tasty', 'cheap', 'quick'). Explain that they are going to act as Investigative Detectives to study 6 characters and identify their nutritional drivers.
10-40m
Mystery Bag Station Rotations
Divide students into 6 groups. Hand out Student Packets. Set a timer for 4-5 minutes per station . On your signal, groups rotate, empty the corresponding mystery bag, analyze the clues, and write their deductions in their packets.

The Grand Debrief (Whole Class)
Gather the class back. Walk through each station. Let different groups present their findings, identify the correct factor, and support their answer using the specific evidence from the cards. Cross-reference with Page 2 of this guide.

Station Mastery Guide
Quick references, expected student deductions, and guidance for each station.
Bag 1: The Budget Crunch Economic
Core Clues: Grocery store receipt showing cheap processed noodles, a strip of $0.50 coupons, store flyers comparing low pricing.
Teacher Insight: Cost is the key driver. Focus students on how restricted budgets make cheaper, nutrient-sparse options more attractive.
Bag 2: The Midnight Rush Physical / Time
Core Clues: Sticky note saying "Late shift, eat fast", microwave meal packaging, gas station snacks list, busy calendar.
Teacher Insight: High convenience & time deficit. When exhausted or rushed, we prioritize ready-to-eat over high nutrition.
Bag 3: The Celebration Social / Cultural
Core Clues: Traditional grandmother recipe card, birthday text message exchange, group party photo with pizzas, festive plate napkin.
Teacher Insight: Community and bonding. We eat to conform, celebrate, or honor heritage. Peer environment heavily impacts volume and type.
Bag 4: The Mood Booster Psychological
Core Clues: Stressed text bubble prints, journal page detailing a rough breakup, tub of chocolate ice cream receipt, "Comfort Foods" list.
Teacher Insight: Emotional eating. Stress hormones and low dopamine cause immediate cravings for high-fat, high-sugar comfort foods.
Bag 5: The Fitness Fuel Physiological
Core Clues: Gym schedule printout, medical chart alert note warning of severe peanut allergies, protein powder scoop, "Low Sodium" sticker.
Teacher Insight: Internal physical demands. Allergies, illnesses, athletic goals, and basic biological hunger signals dictate this profile.
Bag 6: The Eye Candy Environmental
Core Clues: Social media influencer feed mock-up, vibrant energy drink banner with "70% OFF", cartoon mascot cutout, neon menu board.
Teacher Insight: External marketing and media. Packaging design, bright color aesthetics, and viral trends subliminally guide decisions.
High-Impact Discussion Questions
1. Overlapping Factors: "Did any of the bags feel like they could be driven by multiple factors? (e.g., physical convenience mixed with economic budget limits?)"
2. Personal Reflection: "Which of these 6 factors most heavily controls your daily choices? What about when you are under severe stress during exam week?"
3. Media Influence: "Why are child-targeted cereal boxes placed on the lower shelves of grocery store aisles? What kind of influence is that (Environmental/Marketing)?"
4. Empowerment Step: "Once you recognize these forces, how can you combat the negative ones (like stress-eating or budget barriers) to make healthier, conscious eating choices?"
