Bee Buddies Teacher Guide
Bee Buddies
Teacher Facilitation Guide
Duration 45 MIN
Learning Objective
Students will practice safe behaviors around bees and understand they are helpful "busy" workers who only sting if they feel scared.
Materials Needed
- Bee Buddies Slides
- Bee Friend Worksheet
- Music Player (Upbeat music)
- Crayons / Markers
Lesson Procedure
01
Warm-up: The Buzz Around Town (5 min)
Gather students in a circle on the rug.
- Ask: "Who here has ever seen a bee? Show of hands!"
- Ask: "How did you feel when you saw it? Was it scary or exciting?"
- Key Point: Explain that sometimes we feel scared because of stingers, but today we'll learn why we don't need to be afraid if we follow one simple rule.
02
Video Viewing: Busy Bees (5 min)
Watch the Bee Buddies Slides video. Focus on the safety segments:
Segment 1: 1:01 - 1:19 (Why bees sting)
Segment 2: 3:12 - 3:25 (The Safety Rule)
After watching, have the whole class repeat the rule: "Leave her alone and give her room!"
03
Main Activity: Statues and Space (15 min)
How to Play:
- Tell students they are all "Busy Bees" looking for nectar. Play upbeat music.
- Students "fly" around the room (flapping wings, buzzing softly).
- When the music stops, the teacher calls out a word.
- If "FLOWERS!": Students keep buzzing and pretend to drink nectar.
- If "BEE!": Students must immediately stop, fold their arms, and stand perfectly still like a statue.
- Explain: "By staying still, we show the bee we aren't going to hurt her. We are giving her space!"
04
Creative Work: Bee Friend (10 min)
Distribute the Bee Friend Worksheet and crayons.
- Encourage students to use bright yellow and black.
- Read the sentence at the bottom together: "I give bees space."
- As they color, walk around and ask: "How can we be a good friend to a bee?" (Response: Give them room!)
05
Closure: One Last Statue (5 min)
Gather for a final wrap-up.
- Recap: Are bees "mean"? (No, they are just busy!)
- What is our golden rule? ("Leave her alone and give her room!")
- Do a final "Bee Statue" pose together before transitioning to the next activity.
Teacher Tips
Energy Management: If students get too loud during the "flying" phase, remind them that bees are quiet workers. Encourage "soft buzzing."
Fearful Students: If a child is genuinely afraid, let them be the "Nectar Guard" who helps spot the "bees" during the game.
