Lesson 1 of 5 FORMATION
Objective
To transition students from "players" to "managers." This lesson establishes the organizational structure and strategic identity that will govern their performance throughout the tournament sequence.
The "Draft Day" Hook
Create a high-energy environment. If possible, use a whistle to start the session. Display the "Draft Day Slides" prominently. Treat the room like a "War Room" where professional coaches are making high-stakes decisions.
Key Concepts
Role Responsibility
Tactical Symmetry
Team Synergy
Guiding Role Selection
What to look for:
"Don't just pick your best player as Captain."
Captain: High emotional intelligence, loud voice, respects officials.
Tactician: Analytical, understands spacing, likes strategy games.
Manager: Organized, focused on details, good at conflict resolution.
Differentiated Instruction:
For lower-skill groups: Encourage the 4-4-2. It provides the most natural defensive coverage and is easier to visualize.
For advanced groups: Challenge them to explain how their formation will "counter" a 4-4-2. Ask about transition phases (Attack to Defense).

Mastering the Set Play: Corner Kicks & Free Kicks
The Math of Victory
Did you know that up to 30% of goals in professional football are scored from set pieces?
High predictability
Defensive coordination
Element of surprise
"Football is a game of chaos. Set pieces are the only moments of absolute control."
Corner Kick Strategy
The Near Post Flick
A player runs to the near post to "flick" the ball with their head toward the far post or center goal.
Fast & Decisive
The Target Man
Cross delivered high to the tallest player in the "6-yard box" for a powerful direct header.
Power & Presence
The Wall: Free Kick Defense
01
Positioning
The Goalkeeper positions the wall to cover the "short side" of the goal.
02
Numbering
3-5 players depending on the distance and angle of the kick.
03
Courage
Players must stay tight, jump together, and not turn their backs.

Lesson 2 of 5 SET PLAYS
The "Workshop" Approach
Unlike a standard drill session, this is an Inquiry-Based Workshop . Your role is not to teach "the perfect corner," but to help teams refine their own ideas through questioning and testing.
Powerful Questions for Teams:
"If the goalie catches this ball, what is your secondary defensive plan?"
"How does your 'code name' signal to the rest of the team when to move?"
"What happens if the ball is delivered short? Who is the backup?"
Common Pitfalls
Over-Complication: Teams design 10-step plays. Guide them back to 2-3 decisive movements.
Inactive Players: Ensure the "Tactician" is watching the shape, not just playing.
No Defense: Remind teams that a set play can lead to a counter-attack if poorly executed.
Pitch Management
1
Divide the pitch into "Stations" (Corners, Free Kick zones).
2
Assign one team to play "Passive Defense" for another team's practice.
3
Whistle signals: 5 minutes to design on paper, 10 minutes to drill on field.
Pro-Tip: Have teams record a 30-second "video brief" of their play for their teammate who might be absent next time.

Beyond the Whistle
While the game is live, the non-playing managers and tacticians must:
1
Observe Patterns: Is the opposition exploiting a gap in your 4-4-2?
2
Track Set Plays: Did your corner kick routine work? Why or why not?
3
Prepare Adjustments: What 3 points will you make at halftime?
"Good coaches play the game. Great coaches read the game."
The 3-Minute Reset
Halftime is not a break; it's a strategic pivot. Teams have exactly 180 seconds to:
Analyze
One thing that worked and one thing that didn't.
Adjust
Make one tactical change (e.g., move wider, drop deeper).
Inspire
Captain's 30-second motivational "rally cry."
