Learning Objectives
• Identify and define fundamental DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) terms: loops, tracks, and layers.
• Apply mixing principles (volume, panning, EQ) to create a balanced sonic environment.
• Compose a 30-60 second instrumental track that follows a logical structural arc.
Required Hardware

Instructional Roadmap

The Hook: Visualizing Sound (10 mins)
Play a popular contemporary song and ask students to "un-bake the cake." What are the ingredients? Drums, bass, melody, atmosphere? Use the **Beat Lab Slides** to visualize how these layers sit on top of each other in a DAW.

Direct Instruction: DAW Anatomy (15 mins)
Demonstrate the interface. Focus on the Timeline , the Loop Library , and the Mixer . Show how dragging a loop creates a new track. Key concept: Loops are building blocks; mixing is how we make them fit together.

Guided Practice: Layering Loops (20 mins)
Students use the Layering Loops Activity sheet. They must choose three distinct loops (Drum, Bass, Melodic) and try to "clean" the sound using volume sliders so one doesn't overpower the others.

Production: The Digital Single (30-45 mins)
Release students to work on their **Digital Single Project**. Circulate and help with technical hurdles. Look for students who are using "panning" (left/right) to create space in their mix.
Differentiation
Support
Limit students to only 4 tracks to prevent sensory overload. Provide a "starter template" with a pre-selected drum loop.
Extension
Encourage advanced students to record their own audio or use MIDI editors to customize loop melodies.
Common Pitfalls
"Red-lining": Students turn everything up to max volume. Teach them that mixing is often about subtracting volume.
Clashing Keys: Loops from different libraries might be in different musical keys. Advise students to stick to one "Pack" initially.
Fear of Silence: Remind students that not every track needs to play all the time.

Technical Specs
Length: Minimum 45 seconds, maximum 90 seconds.
Tracks: At least 5 unique layers (Drum, Bass, 2x Melodic, 1x FX/Atmosphere).
