The Human Drum Machine
The Challenge:
As a class, we will maintain a perfect 100 BPM pulse while different groups "program" patterns on top.
Group 1: The Kick (Stomp on 1 and 3)
Group 2: The Snare (Clap on 2 and 4)
Group 3: The Hi-Hat (Snap every 8th note)
Warning
If one person rushes, the whole machine crashes.
Pulse vs. Rhythm
The Pulse
The steady heartbeat of the music. It never changes speed unless the tempo changes.
The Rhythm
The patterns of sounds and silences that happen on top of the pulse.
"The pulse is the GRID . The rhythm is the ART ."
The Grid: Subdivision
Subdivision is the act of breaking a beat into smaller, equal parts.

Say it out loud:

Meter: The Room Shape
Meter is how we group pulses together. It tells us which beats are strong and which are weak.
4/4 Time
Four beats per group.
Feel: ONE , two, Three , four.
3/4 Time
Three beats per group.
Feel: ONE , two, three (Waltz feel).

Metronome (set to 100 BPM)
The Mission
Students will function as individual "tracks" in a digital audio workstation (DAW). The goal is to demonstrate that complex rhythms are simply layers of subdivisions locked into a steady pulse.

Establish the Pulse
Start the metronome at 100 BPM. Have the entire class nod their heads or tap their toes silently. Key Check: Ensure no one is "flamming" (hitting slightly off-beat).

Track 1: The Kick Drum (Stomp)
Assign 1/3 of the room to Group 1. They stomp on beats 1 and 3.

Track 2: The Snare (Clap)
Assign another 1/3 to Group 2. They clap on beats 2 and 4. Start them while Group 1 is still going.

The final group snaps on every 8th note (the "&"). This is where most groups fail.

Troubleshooting the Machine
The "Rush" Factor
Students often speed up when adding layers. If this happens, cut everyone except the metronome and reset the pulse.
Volume Balancing
Remind students that a drum machine needs balance. If the claps drown out the snaps, "turn down the fader" on Group 2.
Debrief Prompts
"Which layer was the hardest to maintain? Why?"
(Usually the hi-hat, because it requires the most constant attention to the subdivision.)
"What happens to the 'groove' if Group 1 misses a single beat?"
(The foundation feels unstable; it breaks the listener's expectation.)

The Hook: straight vs. funky
"The Straight"
Think of a standard march. 1-2-3-4. Every beat is exactly where you expect it to be.
Predictable
"The Funky"
Imagine shifting those accents just a tiny bit. Suddenly, the music "leans" forward.
Syncopated
Syncopation
A temporary displacement of the regular accent caused by stressing the WEAK BEATS or the OFF-BEATS.
Weak Beats
Beats 2 and 4 in 4/4 time.
Off-Beats
The "&" (the space between the pulses).
The Result
Creates a sense of surprise and "swing."

An Accent is an emphasis placed on a particular note. It should be played louder or with more "punch" than the notes around it.

James Brown, the "Godfather of Soul," changed music by moving the accent to "THE ONE."

02 Independence Drills
Follow these steps to "split" your brain. Check off each box once you can perform the drill for 10 seconds without stopping.
Drill A: The Anchor
Left Hand taps a steady 1-2-3 pulse while you speak the words "ONE-TWO" evenly.
Drill B: The Switch
Tap 2 beats with Right, 3 beats with Left for 4 measures, then swap roles without stopping the pulse.
Drill C: The Mnemonic
Perform the full 2:3 polyrhythm while saying the phrase: "Pass the God-Damn But-ter" perfectly in sync.
Drill D: Speed Challenge
Start at 60 BPM. Increase the speed of your 2:3 loop by 10 BPM every minute until you reach 120 BPM.
