Mission: Scavenger Hunt
1
Rotate through the Elemental Stations around the room.
2
Scan the provided reading texts for characters with nature radicals.
3
Sketch the character and record its Pinyin/Meaning on your sheet.
Goal: Find at least 3 characters for each of the 5 elements.

Lesson 1: Nature Roots Setup & Facilitation
Objective
Students will recognize the five core nature radicals (氵, 火, 木, 艹, 土) and understand how they function as semantic anchors to group vocabulary into "thematic families."
Preparation Checklist
Five Stations: Label five areas of the room with the target radicals.
Text Selection: Print 2-3 short Chinese reading passages for each station that are heavy in the specific radical of that station.
The Bucket: Prepare a bucket of character cards for the "Hook" activity.
Timeline
Hook: Bucket Sort 10 min
Slides: Semantic Anchors 15 min
Station Rotation 30 min
Reflection/Debrief 10 min
The Hook: Elemental Bucket Sort
As students enter, give them a random character card (e.g., 海, 烧, 桥, 药, 地). They must physically go to the corner of the room they think "homes" that character based on its radical.
"Don't worry if they don't know the character yet. Encourage them to look for the visual 'DNA'—the component that matches the station sign."
Station Material Suggestions
Station Common Characters to Include Meaning Link Water (Flat) Land, territory, construction
Guiding Questions
"Why would the character for 'bridge' (桥) have a wood radical even if the bridge is made of stone or metal today?"
"Can you find a character where the nature connection is 'hidden' or surprising?" (e.g., 药 - medicine comes from plants).
"If you saw a character you'd never seen before with the 'water' radical, what would you guess about its meaning?"

Radicals in Motion
Most verbs in Chinese are built from a radical that tells you how the action is performed.
Kinesthetic Linking
Connecting physical movement to visual components.
扌
If it uses a hand...
...the radical is usually on the left.

Game Time: Radical Charades
The Setup
One student draws a character card. They MUST NOT speak.
The Action
Act out the verb. The class must guess the radical first, then the character.
Example: "Push" (推)
Which radical is used?

忄 / 心 (Heart / Xīn)
Character Pinyin Meaning 怕 pà To fear 想 xiǎng To think / miss 念 niàn To miss / study 快 kuài Fast / Happy 忙 máng Busy
Pro-Tip: Structural Placement
Notice how the radical is usually on the left for physical actions (扌, ⻊, 口) and psychological states (忄). When the radical is on the (心, 足), it often relates more to the noun form or a foundational state of being.

The Challenge
Choose one "Root Radical" that we have studied. You will build a Semantic Mind Map (your "Radical Tree") showing at least six different characters that share this root.
Requirements:
Write the Root Radical in the trunk.
Add 6 "leaves" (Characters + Pinyin).
Explain the semantic link for each leaf.
Use color to distinguish different meaning branches.
