Habits & General Truths
2
Refusal & Intentions
"No! I Won't!"
In Mandarin, 不 (bù) is the voice of your inner toddler. It expresses subjective choice and refusal.
我不去!(Wǒ bù qù!)
"I'm not going! (I refuse to go!)"
Action Drills: Present & Future
Habit
General Truths
Negating things you just don't do regularly.
我不喝咖啡。
Wǒ bù hē kāfēi. (I don't drink coffee.)
Future
Intentions
Negating things you won't do later.
我不去上海。
Wǒ bù qù Shànghǎi. (I won't go to Shanghai.)
Crucial Distinction
不 (bù) is for WILL NOT or DO NOT.
It is subjective. It's about how you feel or what you plan.

Lesson 1: Subjective Negation & Refusal
NAME:
DATE:
Part A: The Toddler Refusal
Imagine you are a stubborn toddler. For every suggestion below, use 不 (bù) to refuse. Write the full negative sentence in Mandarin characters and Pinyin.
01
Suggestion: 吃苹果 (Chī píngguǒ) — "Eat an apple."
Mandarin Characters:
Pinyin:
02
Suggestion: 去睡觉 (Qù shuìjiào) — "Go to sleep."
Mandarin Characters:

Part B: Routine Denial
Negate the following habitual sentences using 不 (bù). Note that habits describe general truths, not specific past events.
4. 他喝茶。(Tā hē chá.) — "He drinks tea."
Negated Sentence:
5. 我弟弟说中文。(Wǒ dìdi shuō Zhōngwén.) — "My brother speaks Chinese."
Negated Sentence:
6. 我们去学校。(Wǒmen qù xuéxiào.) — "We go to school."
Negated Sentence:
Linguistic Reflection
In English, we say "I don't go" (habit) and "I won't go" (future refusal). In Mandarin, both often use 不 (bù). Why do you think Mandarin uses the same word for both?

Lesson 1: The Subjective Negative (Bù)
Lesson Duration 55 Minutes
Learning Objectives
Identify contexts requiring 不 (bù) negation (habitual, future, states).
Apply tone sandhi rules correctly for "bù" (changing to 2nd tone before 4th tone).
Distinguish between refusal (subjective) and non-occurrence (objective).
The Hook (10 mins)
The Toddler Challenge:
Tell the class you are their "parent" for the next 5 minutes. You will suggest various activities (eat, sleep, clean, go to school). Every student must shout back a firm refusal using 不 + [Verb].
Example: T: "Chī píngguǒ!" (Eat an apple!) S: "Bù chī!" (Won't eat!)
Key Vocabulary
不 (bù)
Not / Won't (Present/Future)
习惯 (xíguàn)
Habit / To be used to
拒绝 (jùjué)
To refuse
Instructional Sequence
15 min
Visual Presentation (Slides 1-5)
Walk through the core rule. Focus heavily on the subjective nature of 'bù'. If someone says "Wǒ bù qù," they are deciding not to go.
20 min
Guided Practice: Worksheet
Students complete Part A & B of the Refusal Drills Worksheet. Circulate to check for tone markers (remind them about the bù/bú shift).
10 min
Reflective Debrief
Discuss the Part C reflection. Common student answer: Mandarin focuses on the nature of the action (subjective vs objective) rather than just the timeline.
Worksheet Answer Key
Part A: Refusals
我不吃苹果。(Wǒ bù chī píngguǒ.)
我不去睡觉。(Wǒ bù qù shuìjiào.)
我不做作业。(Wǒ bù zuò zuòyè.)
Part B: Habits
他不喝茶。(Tā bù hē chá.)
我弟弟不说中文。(Wǒ dìdi bù shuō Zhōngwén.)
我们不去学校。(Wǒmen bù qù xuéxiào.)
Objective Negation Slides Lesson Two
The Objective
Negative
Reporting the Facts with 没 (Méi)
The Rule of 没 (Méi)
Use 没 (méi) or 没有 (méiyǒu) to negate:
Past Actions
"I didn't do it." (Fact-checking the past)
Possession (Have)
"I don't have it." (Always use méi with yǒu)
Status Report
没 (méi) acts like a status report. It doesn't care about your feelings; it only cares about whether the action is complete.
Completed
我吃了。(Wǒ chī le.)
"I ate."
Not Completed
我没吃。(Wǒ méi chī.)
"I didn't eat."
The Golden Rule
有 (yǒu) NEVER takes 不 (bù)
Always say 没有 (méiyǒu) to express "don't have".
Mei vs. Bu (A Sneak Peek)
SUBJECTIVE (不)
我不喝咖啡。
Wǒ bù hē kāfēi.
"I don't drink coffee (as a habit/choice)."
OBJECTIVE (没)
我没喝咖啡。
Wǒ méi hē kāfēi.
"I didn't drink coffee (this morning/just now)."

买牛奶 (Buy milk)
做作业 (Do homework)
看书 (Read a book)
打电话 (Make a call)
去商店 (Go to store)
Look at the checklist. For the items not checked off, report that they didn't happen using 没 (méi).
01. Homework Task
我没___________________。
02. Call Task
我没___________________。
03. Store Task
我没___________________。
Part B: I Don't Have It
Remember the Golden Rule: You always use méi to negate the verb 有 (yǒu), even in the present.
4. I don't have a pen.
我没有...
5. He doesn't have money.
他没有...
6. We don't have time.
我们没有...
7. My home doesn't have a cat.
我家没有...
Grammar Warning: The Vanishing 了 (Le)
When we use 没 (méi) to negate a past action, the completion marker 了 (le) must disappear.
我没吃了。
我没吃。

Lesson 2: The Objective Negative (Méi)
Approach Skill-Building
Core Concept: Fact vs. Intention
Students often struggle with méi because English uses "not" for everything. The key in this lesson is to pivot from Lesson 1's "refusal" to Lesson 2's "objective report."
Key Point: If an action hasn't been completed in the past, or if we are talking about possession (to have), méi is the mandatory choice.
Pacing Guide
The Hook: Status Report (10 min)
Display the checklist from the worksheet on the screen. Ask students to report their "status" on these tasks from yesterday. Emphasize that "méi" is like a computer status code (0/1).
Direct Instruction (15 min)
Slides 1-5. Highlight the "Golden Rule" of 没有 (méiyǒu). Students often try to say "bù yǒu"—correct this immediately. Discuss the "Vanishing 了 (Le)" rule.
Skill-Building Practice (20 min)
Students complete the Checklist Reporting Worksheet. Check for characters and the omission of "le" in Part A.
Common Pitfalls
The "Bù Yǒu" Error
Students will instinctively say "bù yǒu" (not have). Remind them that 'yǒu' is an objective state of existence, so it always requires 'méi'.
The "Méi ... Le" Error
Students keep "le" because they think "le = past tense". Remind them "le" is completion, and "méi" cancels the completion.
Answer Key: Status Report
Part A: Checklist
1. 我没做作业。(Wǒ méi zuò zuòyè.)
2. 我没打电话。(Wǒ méi dǎ diànhuà.)
3. 我没去商店。(Wǒ méi qù shāngdiàn.)
Part B: Possession
4. 我没有笔。(Wǒ méiyǒu bǐ.)
5. 他没有钱。(Tā méiyǒu qián.)
6. 我们没有时间。(Wǒmen méiyǒu shíjiān.)
7. 我家没有猫。(Wǒjiā méiyǒu māo.)

Lab Mission
In this lab, you will analyze scenarios. Your job is to select the correct negation (bù or méi) based on whether the speaker is expressing refusal/habit or non-completion.
CASE 01
The Homework Crisis
Scenario A
"I'm not doing my homework. I refuse! I'm going to play games instead."
NEGATION:
我_________做作业。
Scenario B
"I didn't do my homework yet. I ran out of time yesterday."
NEGATION:

Scenario A
"He doesn't drink tea. He only ever drinks water." (Habit)
NEGATION:
他_________喝茶。
Scenario B
"He didn't drink the tea on the table this morning." (Event)
NEGATION:
他_________喝茶。
Laboratory Trap: The "Mental State" Challenge
Analyze these two sentences. One is a state of being, the other is possession. Decide which negation tool is required for each.
1. I don't know him. (State of knowledge)
我不_________他。
2. I don't have time. (Possession)
我没_________时间。

One Star Review
How do we complain in Mandarin? We use negated adjectives to describe terrible food, slow service, and expensive prices.
不贵 (Not expensive)
不好吃 (Not tasty)
不太快 (Not very fast)
QUIZ RECAP
Why do we use bù for adjectives and not méi?
Because adjectives describe states or characteristics, not completed actions.
