Mastering Mandarin Word Order
The Broken Time Machine
In English, we can say:
"I eat breakfast at 7:00."
CRITICAL WARNING:
If you put the time at the end in Mandarin, the "Time Machine" breaks! The sentence will not make sense.
The Golden Rule
Formula A
Subject + Time + Verb
OR
Formula B
Time + Subject + Verb
Calibration Examples
I watch TV at 8:00.
我八点看电视。
Wǒ bādiǎn kàn diànshì.
Tomorrow he goes to school.
明天他去学校。
Míngtiān tā qù xuéxiào.
Time is ALWAYS before the action!
Quick Fix!
The following sentence is BROKEN. How do we fix it?
我 去 学校 上午八点。
Wǒ qù xuéxiào shàngwǔ bādiǎn.
Can you move the time word to the correct spot?

In Mandarin, time words (like yesterday , 8:00 AM , or Monday ) cannot go at the end of the sentence. They must be placed either before the Subject or after the Subject (but always before the action!).

Part 1: Spot the Glitch
Circle the time word in each English sentence. Then, look at the Mandarin sentence. Is it "Functional" (Correct) or "Broken" (Incorrect)?
I eat noodles at 12:00.
我 十二点 吃 面条。
Functional
Broken
She goes to school on Monday.
她 去 学校 星期一。
Functional
Broken
Today we have Mandarin class.
今天 我们 有 中文课。

Mission Objectives
Identify the correct placement of time adverbs in Mandarin (S-T-V / T-S-V).
Contrast Mandarin time syntax with English time syntax.
Correct "broken" sentences that use English word order.
The Hook: Broken Machine
Tell the students they are time travel mechanics. Their engine (the sentence) is sputtering. In English, we can toss time words anywhere—start or end. In Mandarin, the "fuel" (time) must be injected before the engine fires (the verb). If you put time at the end, the machine explodes!
Quick Syntax Key
RIGHT ✅
Wǒ jīntiān qù...
(S-T-V)
RIGHT ✅
Jīntiān wǒ qù...
(T-S-V)
WRONG ❌
Wǒ qù... jīntiān.

Students work through the Repair Shop Worksheet . Walk around and check specifically for students trying to put time at the end—this is the most common fossilized error for English speakers.
3
Debrief & Calibration (10 mins)
Review answers. Ask: "Can we put the time before the subject?" (Yes). "Can we put it after?" (Yes). "Can we put it after the verb?" (NO!).

Part 1: Observe & Deduce
Look at the pairs of sentences below. One describes a general habit or action in progress, while the other describes an action that is finished .
Scenario A
我 买 苹果。
(Wǒ mǎi píngguǒ.)
"I buy apples."
Scenario B
我 买 了 苹果。
(Wǒ mǎi le píngguǒ.)
"I bought apples."
In your own words, what does adding the character 了 (le) change about the meaning of the sentence?
Part 2: The Completion Check
Does the sentence need 了 (le)? Write "YES" or "NO" based on whether the action is finished.
1. I am currently eating dinner.
___
2. I already did my homework.
___
3. I went to the store yesterday.
___
4. I usually play basketball on Friday.

The Linguistic Shift
English speakers rely on Tense (changing the verb: eat -> ate). Mandarin speakers rely on Aspect (marking the status of the action). Lesson 3 moves students from a "time travel" mindset to a "completion" mindset.
The "Empty Cup" Demo
STEP 1
Action: General / Present
Hold a full cup of water. Take a sip, but keep drinking.
Teacher: "Wǒ hē shuǐ. I drink water." (Point to the water still in the cup).
STEP 2
Action: Completed
Finish the water (or pretend to) and turn the cup upside down to show it's empty.
Teacher: "Wǒ hē le shuǐ. I drank water. It is finished."
STEP 3
Inquiry Question
Ask students: "Did I change the word for 'drink' (hē)?"
(Answer: No).
"What did I add to show the cup is empty?"
(Answer: 'le' 了).
Pitfall: Overusing 'Le'
Students will try to put 'le' at the end of every past-time sentence. Remind them that if they use a time word like "yesterday," 'le' is only needed if they want to emphasize that the action was completed .
Pro Tip: The Checkmark
Encourage students to draw a small checkmark next to the word 了 in their notes to associate it with "task complete."
"Grammar is the architecture of thought. Let's build it well."

Assessment Goal
Evaluate the student's ability to synthesize Mandarin syntax (S-T-V / T-S-V) and aspectual markers (le 了) to create a chronological narrative. Focus on functional accuracy over handwriting or character aesthetics.
Criteria Mastery (4) Developing (3-2) Beginning (1) Word Order (S-T-V) Consistently places time phrases before the verb in all sentences. Mostly correct, but 1-2 instances of English syntax (Time at end). Frequent errors in word order; time phrases placed after the verb. Completion Particle (了) Correctly uses 'le' to mark every completed past action. Uses 'le' inconsistently or places it incorrectly (e.g., before verb). Missing 'le' for past actions or misunderstanding of its function. Narrative Flow Story follows a clear chronological order from morning to night. Mostly chronological, but jumps in time make it slightly confusing. No clear timeline; random actions listed without logic. Vocabulary Usage Uses specific clock times and a variety of routine activities. Uses basic time periods (morning/noon) but lacks clock precision. Limited vocabulary; repetitive use of the same action or time.
Global Feedback Stems
"Your 'Time Machine' is perfectly calibrated! Your word order is flawless."
"Watch out for the 'English Ghost'—don't let your time words sneak to the end of the sentence."
"The 'Completion Key' (了) is missing in your second sentence. Remember, if the action is finished, the key must be turned!"
