1. Scaffolding Transition from Cognates
Students just completed a unit on basic cognates. Use their prior knowledge to bridge into food vocabulary. Connect Spanish words like cafetería, menú, ensalada, and jugo directly to their English counterparts before introducing non-cognates like leche, pan, and cuenta.

Use high gestures and visual slides while delivering this 95% Spanish input:
Profesor(a): "¡Hola clase! Bienvenidos al Café del Barrio. Miren la pantalla... Yo tengo hambre (rub belly) y sed (mimic drinking). En el café hay comida deliciosa. Miren: esto es una empanada. ¿Es un jugo? ¡No, es una empanada! ¿A quién le gustan las empanadas? Levanten la mano."
Student Prompting: Ask rapid-fire binary questions to build confidence:
"¿El café es una comida o una bebida?" (Bebida)
"¿Te gusta el queso o prefieres el pan?" (Student responds with choice)

The Authentic Task: "El Mesero y El Cliente"
Students work in pairs. One student plays the role of the waiter (el mesero/la mesera) at "Café del Barrio." The other plays the customer (el cliente/la clienta). The customer must order one food, one drink, ask for the price, and pay politely. The waiter must greet, prompt, state prices, and serve the order.
Checkpoint A Interpersonal Assessment Rubric
Criteria Exceeds Goal (4 pts) Meets Novice Goal (3 pts) Task Completion Completes all elements of ordering with extra detail (e.g., expressing likes, extra polite words). Successfully orders food and beverage, asks for price, and greets/closes nicely. Vocabulary Use Uses correct terms for food, drinks, and numbers fluently without noticeable hesitation. Uses basic food and cafe vocabulary appropriately; some search for words is natural. Comprehensibility Pronunciation and phrasing are clear; easily understood by a sympathetic listener. Message is clear despite small grammar or pronunciation slips; meaning is fully intact. Spontaneity Responds smoothly, makes eye contact, maintains the conversation flow naturally. Relies slightly on script/visual prompts but responds actively to partner's questions.

Provide visual picture menus with the exact target sentence frames printed on the side. Allow matching cards for vocabulary practice.
Extension Activities
Have students write a short Yelp-style review of the café in Spanish, stating why they liked or disliked a specific neighborhood location.
