The Connector Roadmap
In Mandarin, "Connectors" (连词 - liáncí) act like road signs. They tell you where the story is going. Without them, a recipe or a set of instructions becomes a messy pile of words. Today, we are mastering the Sequential Roadmap .
首先 shǒuxiān First
然后 ránhòu Then
接着 jiēzhe Next / After
最后 zuìhòu Finally
Task 1: The Scrambled Boba Recipe
The steps for making 珍珠奶茶 (Zhēnzhū nǎichá) are all mixed up! Read the sentences and use the sequence words to determine the correct order (1-4).
_
最后 ,把煮好的珍珠放进奶茶里。
(Zuìhòu, bǎ zhǔ hǎo de zhēnzhū fàng jìn nǎichá lǐ.)
_
首先 ,准备一锅水并烧开。
(Shǒuxiān, zhǔnbèi yī guō shuǐ bìng shāokāi.)
_
接着 ,等珍珠煮熟后,加入糖浆。
(Jiēzhe, děng zhēnzhū zhǔshú hòu, jiārù tángjiāng.)
_
然后 ,把干珍珠放进开水里煮二十分钟。
(Ránhòu, bǎ gān zhēnzhū fàng jìn kāishuǐ lǐ zhǔ èrshí fēnzhōng.)
Task 2: Your Morning Blueprint
Write a 4-step sequence for your morning routine using the roadmap words. Use characters if you can, or Pinyin.
1. 首先 (First)
2. 然后 (Then)
3. 接着 (Next)
4. 最后 (Finally)

The Out-of-Order Chaos
Chaos Instruction
1. Put the bread in the toaster.
2. Eat the sandwich.
3. Put butter on the bread.
4. Buy the bread at the store.
"Reading without connectors is like a GPS that only says 'Turn' but doesn't say when or where."
Why do we need roadmaps?
• Prevents confusion
• Establishes logical order
• Helps the reader predict what's next

Analysis: The Boba Recipe
Procedural Text
首先 ,准备一锅水并烧开。
"First, prepare a pot of water and boil it."
然后 ,把干珍珠放进开水里煮。
"Then, put the dry pearls into the boiling water."
接着 ,加入糖浆。
"Next, add syrup."
最后 ,放进奶茶里。
"Finally, put into the milk tea."
Structure Tip
Notice how the sentence always starts with the connector? This creates a clear signal for the reader.

Lesson 1: Sequencing Roadmap
Lesson Duration
50 MIN
Learning Objective
Students will be able to identify and apply the sequential connectors 首先 (shǒuxiān) , 然后 (ránhòu) , 接着 (jiēzhe) , and 最后 (zuìhòu) to organize procedural information in Mandarin Chinese.
Materials Needed
• Sequencing Roadmap Slides
• Sequencing Roadmap Worksheet
• Optional: Physical props for the hook (bread, toaster, etc.)
Instructional Steps
01
The Chaos Hook (10 min)
Present the scrambled "Making a Sandwich" instructions from Slide 2. Ask a volunteer to "act out" the instructions literally.
Teacher Tip: If they act out "Eat the sandwich" before "Put butter on the bread," the class will immediately see the absurdity. Emphasize that without logic markers , communication breaks down.
02
Direct Instruction (15 min)
Use Slides 3 and 4 to introduce the four target connectors. Have students repeat the pronunciation. Explain that while ránhòu and jiēzhe are often interchangeable, shǒuxiān and zuìhòu are the "anchor points" of the sentence.
03
Guided Practice: Boba Brew (15 min)
Students complete Task 1 on their worksheet. Walk around to check for comprehension of the sequence.
Answer Key: Task 1
A (最后): 4
B (首先): 1
C (接着): 3
D (然后): 2
04
Application: Morning Blueprint (10 min)
Students write their own routine. Challenge higher-level students to use full characters; allow intermediate students to use a mix of characters and pinyin.
Differentiation Strategies
Support
Provide a word bank of common morning verbs (起床, 刷牙, 吃早饭, 穿衣服) to reduce the cognitive load of vocabulary while focusing on grammar.
Extension
Ask students to add a "Fifth Step" using the connector 除此之外 (In addition to this) to introduce non-sequential information.
Logic Flip Slides Linguistic Blueprint
The Logic Flip
Mastering the "Although... But..." structure to understand contrast and subverted expectations.
Unit: Intermediate Reading Lesson 02
Subverting Expectations
"Although it is raining outside..."
What do you expect to hear next?
Expectation: "...I stayed home and slept."
FLIP: "...but I still went for a run."
The Logic Blueprint
虽然
Suīrán
"Although..."
但是
Dànshì
"...but / yet"
In English, we often use just one (e.g., "Although it was hot, he wore a coat"). In Mandarin, we usually use both to create a clear logic bridge.

Task 2: Plot Twist Mini-Narrative
大卫想参加明年的马拉松。虽然 他以前不喜欢运动,但是 现在他每天早上五点起床跑步。虽然 天气很冷,但是 他从来不放弃。
David wants to participate in next year's marathon. Although he didn't like sports before, but now he wakes up at 5 AM every morning to run. Although the weather is cold, but he never gives up.
1. What was the original expectation of David's sports habits?
2. What is the "Main Point" of the second sentence? (Circle one)
The weather is cold

Task 3: Flip the Script

Task 1: The Expectation Flip
Row 2 (12 o'clock):
Expected: Sleeping. Flip: "But I am still doing homework" or "But I am not tired." (但是我不困 / 但是我还在写作业).
Row 3 (Pretty Shoes):
Expected: Buying them. Flip: "But they are too expensive" or "But I don't have money." (但是太贵了 / 但是我没有钱).
Task 2: Mini-Narrative Analysis
1. Original Expectation: David would not exercise or run because he didn't like sports.
2. Main Point: David never gives up. (Emphasis is on the persistent action, not the cold weather).
Discussion Prompt
Ask students: "Why does the author tell us the weather is cold if the point is that he doesn't give up?" Goal: To show that the "Although" part makes the "But" part feel more impressive.

Task 1: The Evidence Board (Key)
门没关 小猫跑出去了

Task 2: Detective Report
Answer: The first cause was the door being left open (门没关). This is a "chain reaction" question: Door open → Cat runs out → Cat gets wet in rain.
Scaffolding Tip
If students struggle, have them circle the words 因为 and 所以 in different colors in the text. Visually separating the segments helps them see the logical pairs.

Lesson Note
The "Visualizing" task in the worksheet is critical. Mandarin speakers often process "一边" sentences as a single mental image, whereas sequential sentences are processed as a timeline. Ensure students are "drawing the scene" correctly in Task 1.

Teacher Reflection Note
This lesson bridges the gap between grammar and reading comprehension. By removing descriptors, students realize they actually know the core vocabulary, but were simply overwhelmed by the length of the sentence. Encourage them to use "Sentence Surgery" as a strategy in all future reading passages.
