Use Slide 2 to discuss how English pluralizes. Write "I" and "We" on the board. Ask: "What's the relationship between these two words?" Contrast this with the Mandarin logic of adding a "tag" (men) to the existing word. This makes the language feel like a "building block" system.

The "No Bù" Rule
Teacher Note
This is the most critical grammatical takeaway. In Mandarin, 不 (bù) is the universal negation word, EXCEPT for the verb 有. Reinforce this multiple times. We say "méi yǒu", never "bù yǒu".

Model the pronunciation of 有 and 没有. Use physical gestures—a "thumbs up" for having something and an "empty palms" shrug for not having it.

Troubleshooting
Issue: Tone Sandhi
Students may struggle with the two 3rd tones in "wǒ yǒu". Remind them that the first 3rd tone usually changes to a 2nd tone when spoken quickly (wó yǒu), but they don't need to worry about writing it differently.
Issue: Character Complexity
The character 笔 (bǐ) has the bamboo radical on top. Explain that ancient pens were made of bamboo to help them remember the structure.
