Lesson 1: Tools of the Trade • TPR & Game Strategy
Core Objective
Students will recognize five Mandarin nouns (book, pen, paper, desk, chair) and associate the Chinese character (Hanzi) directly with the physical object, bypassing English translation.
TPR Implementation
Total Physical Response (TPR) links language to movement to increase retention.
Step 1:
Point & Say: Point to a book and say shū. Have students point and repeat.
Step 2:
Visual Cue: Hold up the flashcard for 书 while pointing to the book. Repeat for all 5 objects.
Step 3:
Silent Command: Hold up a flashcard (e.g., 笔) without speaking. Students must touch a pen. Reward the fastest student with a "Great!" or a high-five.
The Silent Shop Game
Setup:
Gather a "shop" of supplies (extra pens, paper, books) on your desk. Give each student a set of character cards.
Phase 1: Shopping
Students approach your "shop" one by one. They cannot speak. To "buy" an item, they must present the correct character card for it. If they want a pen, they show 笔.
Phase 2: Group Buying
Hold up an item (e.g., a sheet of paper). The whole class must quickly hold up the corresponding character card. The first row or table to get 100% correct gets "Shop Points."
Pro-Tips for Success
Don't translate: If a student says "I want a pen," just shake your head and point to the character cards. Force the association.
Radical focus: Point out the "bamboo" radical in 笔 early on. It helps with visual memory.
Movement: For 桌子 and 椅子, have students stand up and sit down as part of the TPR.

Incorrect labels reinforce bad habits. Do not allow labels to be posted until they pass this 3-point check:
Stroke Accuracy:
Check for the bamboo radical in 笔 and the silk radical in 纸. Are the number of strokes correct?
Proportion:
Is the character balanced? No one side should be significantly larger than the other unless intentional (e.g., 纸's right side is wider).
Legibility:
Can students read this from across their desk? If it's too faint or messy, have them redo it.
Logistical Tips
Supply Management:
Use thick black markers for the characters. Use blue or red pens for Pinyin/English to create visual hierarchy.
Group Ownership:
Assign specific "Zones" to student groups (e.g., Table 1 labels all the Chairs; Table 2 labels the Teacher's Desk area).

Grammar Focus: The Anchor Point
The most common mistake for beginners is following English word order: "on the desk" → shàngmian zhuōzi.
Teach this logic: You must find the anchor point (the object) first, then decide which side of it you are talking about.

Game: Hide & Seek Clues
This game rewards students for accurate reading and spatial decoding.
1. Setup:
Before class, hide small prizes (stickers, candy, "shop points") around the room in places students already know the words for (e.g., inside a desk, under a chair, on top of a book).
2. Clue Distribution:
Give pairs of students a 'Spatial Clue' written in Hanzi (e.g., 在椅子下面 - zài yǐzi xiàmiàn).
3. The Find:
Students must translate the clue and walk to the correct location to claim their prize. If they go to the wrong spot, they must return to "base" and check the Character Compass.
Scaffolding & Challenges
For Struggling Learners:

Lesson 5: Dream Blueprint • Presentation & Assessment
Project Timeline (2 Days)
Day 1:
Design & Character Verification
Students spend the period drafting their blueprint on the template. Use this time to circulate and verify Hanzi accuracy before they ink their designs. Remind them to use the "Symbol Legend" for clarity.
Day 2:
Presentations & Gallery Walk
Students present their designs using the sentence stems provided in the slides. If time is short, do a "Gallery Walk" where students leave feedback in Mandarin on their peers' designs.
Facilitating Presentations
For 7th graders, oral production in Mandarin can be intimidating. Support them with these strategies:
The "Pointer" Method:
Have the student point to the physical object on their blueprint as they say the word. This reinforces the object-character link and helps them remember the pinyin.
Choral Support:
When a student presents a word (e.g., 桌子), have the rest of the class repeat it together. This lowers the individual pressure.
Reflecting on the Essential Question
End the unit by asking: "Now that our room is labeled and we've designed our own, do you see the objects in this room differently?"
Encourage students to keep their "Living Labels" up as long as possible.
