Learning Objective

The Hook: Pulse Power
Find the Beat: Guide students to find their carotid pulse (neck) or radial pulse (wrist). 2nd graders may need help; suggest "feeling for the drum in your neck."
The Baseline: Have them sit silently for 30 seconds. Ask: "Is your heart drum loud or quiet? Fast or slow?"
The Burst: Lead 30 seconds of intense jumping jacks or running in place.

Lesson 2: Medicines That Speed Us Up
Learning Objective
Students will understand that "Stimulants" are medicines that speed up the heart and brain. They will recognize that while doctors use them for specific health needs (like focus), they can be harmful to a healthy body.
The Hook: Out of Control Claps
Goal: To simulate how "too fast" can feel chaotic.
Have the class start a steady, slow rhythm: Clap... (pause)... Clap...
Say "A little faster!" and speed up the rhythm.
Keep saying "Faster!" every 5 seconds until it's a frantic blur.
Stop suddenly. Ask: "When we were going super fast, could you keep a rhythm? Did it feel calm or messy?"
Connect: Stimulants can make your body feel like that messy clapping - too fast to work correctly.

Lesson 3: Medicines That Slow Us Down
Learning Objective
Students will identify "Depressants" as medicines that slow down body functions. They will understand the risk of a body slowing down to a point where vital organs (like the lungs) stop working.
The Hook: The Snail Race
Goal: To feel the frustration and danger of being "too slow" for a task.
Ask students to stand up and prepare to walk to the other side of the room.
Give the command: "Walk as SLOWLY as possible. Like a snail in peanut butter."
Halfway through, say: "Oh no! There's a giant mud puddle! You have to jump over it... in slow motion!"
Stop and discuss: "Was it easy to jump when your body was stuck in slow motion? Could you protect yourself?"
Connect: Sometimes our bodies need to be fast or steady to stay safe. Medicine that slows us down too much makes it hard for our body to do its job.

The most critical safety point for 2nd graders is respiratory depression (in simple terms).
"Your brain is like a clock that tells your lungs to breathe even when you are asleep. If you take a medicine that slows that clock down too much, the clock might stop. That is why we never touch medicine that isn't for us."

Why is it dangerous?
Strong medicine can trick the brain into thinking it needs the medicine to feel happy or normal.
It can make you feel very sick to your stomach.
Just like depressants, it can make you forget to breathe.
It is very "sticky" — it's hard for some people to stop taking it.

Lesson 4: Stopping the Pain
Learning Objective
Students will explain how strong pain medicines (opioids) block pain signals from reaching the brain. They will categorize injuries into "Big Jobs" (requiring strong medicine) and "Small Stuff" (not requiring medicine).
The Hook: The Mute Button Analogy
Setup: Bring in a real TV remote control if possible.
Ask the class to make a constant "AAAAAAHHHH" noise (the pain signal).
Press the "MUTE" button on the remote. The class must go silent immediately.
Press "MUTE" again to turn the sound back on.
Explain: "The noise was still there, but the remote (the medicine) stopped the brain from hearing it."
Connect: Opioids are very strong remotes. They don't fix the injury; they just stop the brain from feeling it.
