Force Vectors
Strength is often concentrated in a single direction. Pulling back against a grip is fighting 100% of that force.
The Weak Link
A circle has no beginning, but a grip does. The space between the thumb and fingers is the "escape hatch."
Torque
Rotating the wrist creates angular momentum that forces the opponent's thumb to yield.
The "Elbow-In" Strategy

Identify the Opening
Look for the gap between the thumb and the fingertips of the opponent's hand.

Bring your elbow toward your own ribs, then toward your opponent's elbow.

Rotate and Exit
Rotate your wrist like you are turning a key to exit through the weak link (the thumb).

The Foundation: Base
Before the release, ensure students have a wide stance. "You cannot move the wrist if your own feet are being moved."

The Lever: Elbow Engagement
Instructional Cue: "Elbow to Elbow." If you pull your hand, you use the forearm muscles. If you bring your elbow to their elbow, you use your entire lat and shoulder complex.

The Weak Link: The Thumb
Show students the gap between the thumb and the pointer finger. "This is the escape hatch." Every release must exit through this point.
Advanced Troubleshooting
Issue: "The opponent is too strong for the rotation."
Fix: Use the second hand. Grab your own fist and use the weight of your whole body to drive the elbow forward.
Issue: "I keep pulling my hand back into their fingers."
Fix: Focus on your pinky finger. Rotate your pinky toward their thumb before you move.

Drop the Base
Lower your hips immediately. Become un-liftable. This prevents you from being carried away or slammed.

Create Space
Use your hips to "bump" the opponent's pelvis. A 2-inch gap is enough for your arms to get through.

The Exit
Swim your hands inside, push their face or shoulders, and disengage. Run if possible.
Remember: The person who controls the hips, controls the fight.

A frame is a structural support that uses bone alignment instead of muscle strength to create space.

Common Mistake The Mechanical Risk Teacher Verbal Cue Leaning Forward Defender breaks their own posture, making it easy for the attacker to drag them to the ground or apply a choke. "Glue your spine to their side! Sit down in your chair!" Hand Fighting Only Defender tries to pull the attacker's arm off with hand strength. Arm strength < Strength of the Squeeze. "Use your legs to stand tall! Your hands are just anchors!" Facing Away Defender turns their back to the attacker while trying to run. This exposes the rear of the neck. "Step behind them! Drill: The Posture Walk
Students pair up. One student applies a light side-headlock. The defender does not try to escape yet. They simply practice "walking" their legs around behind the attacker while maintaining a perfectly straight back .
Goal: Feel how the attacker's balance is disrupted just by the defender's movement.
Drill: The Airway Hum
While in a safe headlock simulation, students hum or speak. They compare their voice quality with chin up vs. chin tucked.
Goal: Tangible proof that the chin tuck prevents airway collapse.
Safety Warning: Carotid Pressure
Instruct attackers to squeeze with the bicep against the face, NOT the forearm against the throat. If a student feels dizzy or sees "stars," the drill must stop immediately. This is a technical defense drill, not a strength contest.

Drill 1: The Compass
SETUP: Defender is on the ground in the "Shield" position. Attacker is standing, circling the defender.
GOAL: The defender must rotate on their hip to keep their feet pointed exactly at the attacker's shins at all times.
VARIATION: Attacker suddenly changes direction or attempts to "hop" over the legs.
"Teacher Check: Ensure the defender is on their side, not flat on their back. Moving on your side is 10x faster."
Drill 2: Touch the Head (Game)
SETUP: Defender on the ground. Attacker tries to lightly tap the defender's shoulder or head.
GOAL: Defender uses their legs to intercept the attacker. If the attacker gets close, the defender pushes the attacker's shins or knees to push themselves away.
NO KICKING. JUST PUSHING WITH THE SOLE OF THE FOOT.
"Coaching Cue: 'The legs are the barrier.' If the defender can reach the attacker's shins, the attacker is too far away to hit the head."
Drill 3: The Stand-Up Sprint
SETUP: Defender starts lying flat. On the whistle, they must perform a backward breakfall, establish a shield, and execute a perfect technical stand-up.
GOAL: Complete the cycle in under 4 seconds while maintaining a hand-barrier in front of the face at all times.
WIN CONDITION: The defender is standing in a base, 6 feet away from where they started.
"Check for: Eyes. Do they look at the floor while standing up? If yes, they lose the game. Eyes must be UP."
