1
The vast majority of Chinese characters aren't just "pictures."
2
Most use a formula: Meaning + Sound.
3
Once you see the logic, you can guess the pronunciation of characters you've never seen before.

Standard Anatomy
Left Side: Semantic
Usually tells you the category or broad meaning (e.g., person, water, heart, speech).
Right Side: Phonetic
Usually tells you the pronunciation . It might be an exact match or a "cousin" (different tone or initial).

Why do we say that the sound side is a "clue" rather than a "rule"? (Write your answer below)

Types of Shifts
Tone Shifts
The sound is identical, but the Tone changes.
Example: qīng → qíng → qǐng
Initial Shifts
The Start of the sound changes slightly, but the ending (rhyme) stays the same.
Example: shào → miǎo
Golden Principle
Phonetics are clues, not rules.
Over thousands of years, spoken Chinese changed while the characters stayed the same.
The "sound side" component represents how the word was pronounced back then.
It gets you in the ballpark of the sound, but you still need your dictionary!
Sound Detective Challenge
Listen closely as I read 4 characters sharing the component 方 (fāng).

Phonetic Series & Sound Shifts
Researcher:
Research Goal: Most phonetic components are not perfect predictors of sound. They are "families" that share a base sound but vary in tone or initial consonant. Today, we map these shifts.
1. Mapping the "Qing" (青) Family
Identify the semantic component, then write the pinyin with the correct tone marker.
Character Semantic Side Meaning Exact Pinyin 清 氵 Clear / Pure 请 讠 Please / Invite

| 情 | 忄 | Emotion / Feeling |

| 晴 | 日 | Sunny |

2. Initial and Rhyme Shifts
Phonetic components sometimes change their initial sound (the first letter) while keeping the same rhyme. Identify the shift below.
Series: 少 (shǎo) Initial Shift
秒
Means: Second (time)
Predicted Sound Based on "少":
Actual Sound (miǎo):
Series: 召 (zhào) Initial Shift
超

One stroke (the horizontal line in 本) changes the sound from XIŪ to TǏ!

Your mission is to hunt down "visual imposters" in a set of sentences.
You must identify the wrong character, find its lookalike twin, and explain the phonetic shift.
