Notice how prefix and stem middle vowel are both fatha in Form VI. Guided Practice: Form VI
The Dual Aspect
Slide 5 of 10
Semantic Nuance
Because Form VI verbs imply mutual actions, many of these verbs cannot take a single, isolated singular subject without a prepositional connector (like مَعَ - with). They are most naturally used with plural or dual subjects.
Dual: Al-waladāni yataḥādaṯāni. (The two boys are conversing.)
Plural: Al-ṭullābu yataʿāwanūna. (The students are cooperating.)
Cooperative Roots
Exchange (b-d-l) يَتَبَادَلُ
Argue (j-d-l) يَتَجَادَلُ
Get to know (ʿ-r-f) يَتَعَارَفُ
Observe how mutuality reduces transitiveness (no direct objects needed!). Focus: Dual Aspects
Simulated Behaviors
Slide 6 of 10
By placing a root of bodily states or conditions into Form VI, we indicate that the subject is pretending or simulating that state.
To pretend to be sick → يَتَمَارَضُ
To pretend to be asleep → يَتَنَاوَمُ
To pretend to be blind → يَتَعَامَى
Pretence Example
"The lazy student pretends to be sick so he doesn't go to the exam today."
يَتَمَارَضُ الطَّالِبُ الكَسْلاَنُ اليَوْمَ.
Yatamāraḍu al-ṭālibu al-kaslānu al-yawma.

Form VI (Mutual Reciprocal) No Object Needed
Active pattern يَتَفَاعَلُ

Slide 9 of 10

1. To correspond (III) → To correspond mutually (VI) He messages vs They correspond mutually
يُرَاسِلُ (III) يَتَرَاسَلُ (VI)
2. To participate (III) → To share mutually (VI) He shares vs They share mutually
