Drawing in Space
Calder used wire to "draw" portraits and figures in the air. Instead of heavy clay or stone, he used thin lines to capture a person's character.
Transparency
His sculptures were mostly made of air! You can see right through them, but the wire still creates a recognizable shape.
Imagine a circus made entirely of wire and cork...

Mission
Translate Line to Metal
1 Pick a simple object (key, glasses, shoe).
2 Draw it using a Blind Contour line.
3 Use soft aluminum wire to "trace" that line in the air.
4 Create a base so your drawing can stand!
Pro-Tip
Aluminum wire is very soft. If it gets kinked or messy, use your hands to "un-draw" and start the section over. No erasers needed!

The Blind Contour Rule
A Blind Contour drawing is a single continuous line drawn while looking ONLY at the object, never at your paper.
No peeking at the paper.
Never lift your pencil.
Match your eye and hand speed.
The Wire Mission
You will use one long piece of aluminum wire to "re-draw" your sketch in 3D space.
Keep the wire continuous.
Create "volume" by bending.
Build a base for it to stand.

Objectives
• Students will execute a Blind Contour drawing to build eye-hand coordination.
• Students will translate 2D continuous lines into a 3D wire armature .
• Students will identify negative space within their sculptural form.

Common Snags
The "Peeker"
Students will want to look at their paper. Have them place their hand inside a cardboard box or paper bag while drawing.
Wire Kinks
Aluminum wire gets brittle if bent back and forth too much. Show them how to "smooth" wire by pulling it through a cloth.
Flimsy Bases
Remind students that a 3D object needs three points of contact to stand, like a tripod.
The Procedure

The Hook (10 mins)
Present the Calder slides. Discuss how the wire sculptures look different from traditional heavy statues. Introduce the concept of "Transparency."

Blind Contour Demo (10 mins)
Model a blind contour drawing on the board. Emphasize the "slow eye, slow hand" connection. Expect giggles at the distorted results—explain that these distortions capture "energy."

Wire Translation (30 mins)
Hand out 3-4 feet of wire per student. Instruct them to follow their drawn line exactly. If the line crosses over itself on paper, twist the wire together at that junction.

Gallery Walk (10 mins)
Have students stand their sculptures on their desks. Walk around to see how shadows change the "drawing" depending on the light source.

The "Jaws." Used for clean cuts. Always point the wire down towards the table when cutting!
Needle Nose
The "Precision Fingers." Great for tight loops, tiny details, and holding wire steady.
Flat Nose
The "Vise." Used for heavy bending and crushing wire together for a permanent grip.

The "Handshake" Techniques
The Loop-and-Hook
Create a circle on one wire and a hook on the other. Clamp them shut for a hinge-like joint.
The Candy Cane Wrap
Coil a thin wire tightly around a thick wire. This is the strongest connection!

1. The Hook & Eye
Beginner
Bend a small loop (eye) on one wire end. Bend a hook on the other. Interlock and clamp shut with flat-nose pliers.
2. The Coiled Wrap
Strongest
Hold the wires parallel. Wrap the thinner wire tightly around the thicker wire at least 5 times.
3. The 90° Anchor
Structural
Cross two wires. Wrap one end around the intersection twice, then repeat with the other wire in the opposite direction.
4. The Pigtail Twist
End-to-End
Overlap two ends. Use pliers to twist them together like a braid. Careful: can be sharp if not tucked in!

Lesson 3: Building the Skeletal Frame
The Hidden Hero
Armature (n): an open framework on which a sculpture is molded.
Strength
It holds the weight of the sculpture and prevents it from collapsing or sagging.
Proportion
It sets the size of the head, limbs, and body BEFORE you add any bulk.

Don't build a stiff statue. Think about a person running, a cat stretching, or a bird landing.
Core Strength
The "spine" of your sculpture is its most important wire. Build it thick and strong.
Exaggerate
If your character is leaning, make them lean 10% more! Sculptures lose energy once wrapped.

The 7-Head Rule
A human figure is roughly 7 "heads" tall. Measure your head loop and multiply!

Arm span is usually equal to total height. Keep those wire arms long!

Lower Body
Legs take up about half of the total height. Don't make them too short!

In wire sculpture, the space between the wires is just as important as the wire itself.
Think Like a Net
A net isn't a solid wall—it's a series of lines that "trap" the air to suggest a shape.

The Coil Wrap
Spin the wire tightly around the armature to create muscle or thickness. Great for legs and necks.

The Cage Wrap
Loosely loop the wire around to create a "cage" of air. Perfect for torsos or billowy clothing.
Contrast & Texture
Dense Areas
Wrap wire very close together to show weight and solidity (like a heavy foot or a torso).
Open Areas
Leave big gaps to show lightness or movement (like a flying wing or a long tail).
Mixed Gauges
Use thick wire for structure and VERY thin wire for "fur," "hair," or "detail."

Linear Textures
The Spiral
Wrap tightly in one direction for a mechanical, smooth look.
The Zig-Zag
Bounce the wire back and forth for an energetic, jagged texture.
The Scribble
Wrap randomly and chaotically for organic shapes like fur or clouds.
Self-Check: Negative Space
Hold your sculpture up to a window or a white wall. Can you still see "through" it in key places? If it's becoming a solid blob, you're losing the negative space!

Finding the Balance Point
The Fulcrum
The point on which a lever rests or is supported and on which it pivots. In your sculpture, this is where the wire hangs or balances.
Heavier side? Move the fulcrum CLOSER to the weight.
Lighter side? Move the fulcrum FURTHER from the weight.

The Finger Test
Place your main wire on your index finger. Slide it back and forth until the wire stays perfectly level.

The Counterweight
If one side is too heavy, add a small "bead" or coil of wire to the other side to pull it back into balance.

The Air Test
Blow gently on your sculpture. Does it spin gracefully or tumble over? Adjust the base or hang point.
