Identity Quilt Lesson Plan Arts & Social-Emotional Learning • Grades 4–8 60–90 Minutes (or Two 45-Min Sessions)
The Identity Quilt: Lesson Plan
Fostering belonging and celebrating unique identities through collaborative textile-inspired art.
Essential Questions
• How do our personal stories, roots, and hopes shape who we are?
• How does combining our diverse voices strengthen our classroom community?
Learning Objectives
Identify & Reflect: Express 4 core identity facets (roots, passions, values, goals) using symbolic imagery.
Synthesize & Create: Produce an individual 6.5" quilt block adhering to craftsmanship guidelines.
Connect & Appreciate: Articulate peer commonalities and unique strengths during the gallery walk.
Materials & Studio Prep
Student Materials
Activity sheets (planning + block template), colored pencils, fine-tip markers, scissors, glue sticks.
Textile / Collage Extras
Scraps of patterned scrapbook paper, felt/fabric pieces, yarn, washi tape, metallic gel pens (optional).
Mural Display Base
Large bulletin butcher paper (black or kraft), double-sided tape or hole punch with yarn, mural header banner.
Lesson Flow & Time Allocation
10 Min
Hook & Cultural Context: Present slide deck. Explore quilts as storytelling tools across cultures (Faith Ringgold, Gee's Bend quilters, Hmong story cloths). Ask: "How can a single square tell a whole story?"
15 Min
Identity Brainstorm & Symbol Blueprint: Guide students through Page 1 organizer. Model translating personal qualities into symbols (e.g., an anchor for loyalty, a mountain for perseverance, a family dish for heritage).
30 Min
Studio Time — Crafting Quilt Blocks: Students transfer symbols onto their final 6.5" template. Emphasize craftsmanship, color symbolism, and border stitch design. Students complete their attached Artist Statement tag.
15 Min
Mural Assembly & Gallery Walk: Fasten squares together onto the classroom mural. Facilitate a silent appreciation walk followed by discussion card prompts to reflect on shared connections.

Core Cultural Narratives to Highlight
Gee's Bend Quilters African-American women in rural Alabama who developed bold, improvisational geometric quilts that became celebrated works of modern art.
Faith Ringgold's Story Quilts Combines painted narratives with quilted borders to tell stories of African American resilience, childhood dreams, and freedom.
Hmong Paj Ntaub Vibrant textile story cloths recording folklore, migration journeys, and family heritage through intricate stitch embroidery.
Teacher Facilitation Prompts
Supporting Reluctant Artists:
"You do not need to draw realistic portraits. Geometric shapes, meaningful colors, abstract patterns, and symbols tell powerful stories too."
Deepening Personal Meaning:
"Notice how different colors evoke feelings. Why did you choose green for your goal quadrant? What kind of energy does your border pattern have?"
Differentiation Matrix
ELL / Multilingual
Provide an icon bank with visual symbols. Encourage writing heritage words in students' home languages in their artist statements.
Sensory & Fine Motor
Offer pre-cut geometric felt and patterned paper for collage instead of drawing. Allow oral recording of the artist statement.
Extensions & Fast Finishers
Students can create decorative corner spacer blocks or write an extended prose story behind their quilt square.
Mural Assembly & Display Steps
1. Trim & Prep Cut along dashed boundary lines. Preserve the artist statement strip.
2. Arrange Grid Lay squares on the floor. Mix colors and motifs so complementary patterns sit adjacent.
3. Mount or Stitch Glue to butcher paper or connect corners with yarn through punched holes.
4. Add Border & Key Mount artist statements along the perimeter or compile into an exhibit catalog.
