Essential Instrument Anatomy
Acoustic & Electric
1. Headstock & Pegs
Anchors the strings; turning the pegs tightens (raises pitch) or loosens (lowers pitch).
2. The Nut
Grooved bone or plastic strip that spaces strings and marks fret zero (open strings).
3. Fretboard & Frets
Metal strips pressed into the wooden neck. Pressing behind a fret shortens the vibrating string.
4. Neck & Position Dots
Marker markers usually at frets 3, 5, 7, 9, and double dots at 12 (one octave up).
5. Body & Soundhole
Acoustic body amplifies vibrations naturally. Electric guitars use magnetic pickups instead.
6. Bridge & Saddle
Secures strings to the lower body, transferring string vibration directly into the soundboard.
Standard Tuning (E A D G B E)
Numbered from lowest pitch (thickest, 6th string) to highest pitch (thinnest, 1st string):
6 E (Low E - Thickest)
Eddie
5 A (5th String)
Ate
4 D (4th String)
Dynamite
3 G (3rd String)
Good
2 B (2nd String)
Bye
1 E (High E - Thinnest)
Eddie
Tuner Rule: When turning pegs, always pluck the string repeatedly. If pitch is sharp (too high), tune below the note and tune UP to pitch.

Fretting Hand Setup
Thumb Position: Rest flat on the back centerline of the neck (not hooked over top).
Fingertip Arch: Arch fingers like holding a tennis ball; play on firm fingertips.
Behind the Fret: Press directly behind the metal fret wire to avoid buzz or mute.
R
Pick & Strum Grip
Pick Grip: Hold pick between thumb pad and side of index finger; leave ~5mm tip showing.
Wrist Motion: Strum from a loose, flexible wrist—never lock your elbow or forearm.
Angle of Attack: Slice across strings at a slight 15° tilt for a smooth, warm tone.
Posture & Balance
Seated Position: Sit near chair edge, back straight, guitar waist resting on right thigh.
Neck Upward: Elevate guitar neck at a ~30° to 45° angle so wrist stays straight.
No Slouching: Bring the instrument to your body, do not hunch over the guitar.
Fretting Finger Numbers
Used in all guitar chord charts & tab:
1 = Index 2 = Middle 3 = Ring 4 = Pinky
Guitar Care & Longevity Rules
Wipe Strings: Wipe sweat off strings with a microfiber cloth after every session to prevent rust.
Climate Safe: Never leave guitar in a hot car, cold trunk, or next to home heating radiators.
Use a Stand: Never lean guitar flat against a wall or chair where it can slip and snap headstock.

Chord Switching Rules
1. Anchor Fingers: When switching from Am to C , leave finger 1 & 2 stationary; move only finger 3.
2. Form Before Pressure: Hover fingers into shape above strings first, then land all fingers simultaneously.
3. Never Stop the Right Hand: Keep strumming in tempo even if your fretting hand is half a beat late.

Minor Pentatonic Scales
Fretboard Launchpad
Scale Reference • Page 1
Why Start with the Pentatonic Scale?
“Penta” means five notes. By omitting the two tensest notes of the natural minor scale, the pentatonic creates a framework with no “wrong notes”—the backbone of rock, blues, pop, and jazz soloing.
Formula 1 • b3 • 4 • 5 • b7
A Minor Pentatonic (Box 1 • 5th Fret Position)
Notes: A • C • D • E • G • Starts with finger 1 on the 5th fret of String 6
R Root Note (A) # Scale Tone
Fret 4 Fret 5 [Pos] Fret 6 Fret 7 • Fret 8 Fret 9 1 (E) 2 (B) 3 (G) 4 (D) 5 (A) 6 (E) R1 4 1 3 1 R3 1 3 1 4 R1 4
Finger Pattern Rule: 1-4 on strings 6, 2, 1 • 1-3 on strings 5, 4, 3 Movable: Shift root to Fret 3 for G minor, Fret 7 for B minor
E Minor Pentatonic (Open Position)
Notes: E • G • A • B • D • Uses ringing open strings across frets 0 to 3

Strict Alternate Picking
Every note must strictly alternate stroke direction: Down (↓) → Up (↑) → Down (↓) → Up (↑) .
Downstroke (↓): Pick moves toward floor Π
Upstroke (↑): Pick sweeps back toward ceiling V
3 Golden Practice Rules
1. Ascend & Descend: Practice playing bottom-to-top, then immediately reverse top-to-bottom.
2. Use a Metronome: Start at 60 BPM with 1 note per beat. Clean tone beats speed every time.
3. One Finger Per Fret: Keep fingers hovering right over their assigned fret lane.

Fretting Golden Rule
Directly behind the metal fret wire. Pressing too far back causes buzzing; pressing on top mutes the note. Fingers must be curved onto firm tips.
