Finding your spot
Core Concept #1
What is a Space Bubble?
🫧
My Bubble!
An invisible giant soap bubble all around you that moves wherever you go!
1
Reach both arms out wide: top, bottom, and all around!
2
If you can touch a friend, you are sharing the same bubble!
3
Take one baby step away so both bubbles stay safe and unpopped!
Bubble Check: Blow your imaginary bubble around yourself right now! Gentle Hands 🤲
Core Concept #2
Personal Space vs. General Space
Dance Geography
PERSONAL SPACE 📍
Your Home Base
• The space right on and around your floor marker (your "X" spot).
• You can stretch, bend, twist, and turn without leaving your spot.
• This is where you freeze when the teacher calls "Dancer Ready!"
My Spot • My Bubble
GENERAL SPACE 🌍
The Shared Room
• The whole entire dance room that everyone shares together!
• We travel through general space by walking, skipping, or sliding.
• Watch with eagle eyes so your bubble never bumps into friends.
All of Us • Safe Traveling
Golden Rule: When moving in general space, keep your bubble floating freely! No Bumping! 🛡️
Movement Challenge
Taking Up Big vs. Little Space
Try Both!
⭐ BIG SPACE
Giant Mountain Pose
• Reach arms high and wide toward opposite walls!
• Spread your feet wide and puff out your chest.
• Make your space bubble as huge as a hot air balloon!
Take up as much space as you can!
🌰 LITTLE SPACE
Tiny Seed Pose
• Curl your arms and knees in tight to your tummy.
• Tuck your chin down and crouch low to the floor.
• Make your bubble tiny like a little marble!
Take up as little space as you can!
Teacher Cue: On "GIANT!" take up big space. On "TINY!" take up little space! Switch Fast! ⚡

Essential Question
How do dancers navigate space safely and express feelings?
Key Materials
Spot markers (tape 'X's), music player, worksheets, crayons
Core Classroom Management Routines
Safety First
1. The "Dancer Ready" Call-and-Response: Before class, place tape "X" markers spaced 5–6 feet apart. Whenever the music stops or you call "Dancer Ready!" , students return immediately to their personal spot, stand tall in neutral alignment, and freeze like statues. No running or sliding into spots.
2. Sensory Tour of Space: Begin Lesson 1 by walking students along the studio perimeter. Ask: "What do you see, hear, and feel in this space? Where is a space where you feel completely safe?" This grounds students and establishes shared room expectations.
3. Mindful Squeeze & Release: Have students sit on their spots. Call out body parts from their warm-up routines (hands, shoulders, legs, toes) to squeeze tight for 3 seconds, then release. This transitions energy from hallway excitement to dance focus.
Universal 40-Minute Lesson Structure
Daily Pacing
Part 1: Hook 5–7 Mins
Mindful body check; tour space; review personal bubble rules.
Part 2: Concept 10–12 Mins
Interactive slide presentation; teacher modeling on spots; air drawing.
Part 3: Game 12–15 Mins
Across-the-floor game (Locomotor Train, Mill & Seethe, or Stage Pop).
Part 4: Reflect 8–10 Mins
Cool-down freeze; student worksheet drawing and circling; dismissal.
Suggested Music: Play varied tempos (slow floating piano for curves/caves, upbeat funk 100–110 BPM for trains and stage pops).

Studio Movement Game Facilitation Rules
Mill & Seethe (L1 & L2)
Students walk freely in general space to music without touching. When music stops, call out a shape and level: "Freeze in a BIG curved shape on a LOW level!" Count 5 seconds.
Locomotor Train (L4)
Students form train cars spaced arm's length apart. Call out a locomotor move and pathway: "The train is skipping on a ZIG-ZAG track!" Call "Red Light!" to freeze without crashing.

Theater History Fun Fact
Why Is It Called "Up" and "Down"?
🏔️
The Slanted Hill Stage!
Hundreds of years ago, stages were built on a real slant like a hill so everyone in the back row could see the dancers!
Walking UP the hill = UPSTAGE
Walking away from the crowd meant literally walking UP the wooden hill!
Walking DOWN the hill = DOWNSTAGE
Walking toward the audience meant walking DOWN the wooden slope!
Today stages are flat, but dancers still use the same historic names! Theater Magic 🪄
