Squiggle Magic Teacher Guide Lesson 1 Guide Zero-Prep Required
Squiggle Magic Facilitation Guide
Target: Age 6 (K / Grade 1)
Total Time: 45 Minutes
Supplies Needed
Crayons/markers + Activity Sheet only!
Core Objective
Transform abstract lines into original drawings without fear.
45-Minute Master Timeline
Phase 1: Mystery Hook & Mindset (Slide 1–2) 00:00 – 00:08 (8 min)
Project Slide 2 (The Mystery Line). Ask: "Who sees an animal? Who sees something you can ride? Who sees food?" Reiterate the rule: "In creativity, there are no mistakes, only surprises!" Normalize that every person will see something totally unique.
Phase 2: Warm-Up Squiggle Drills (Slide 3 & Sheet Page 1) 00:08 – 00:20 (12 min)
Pass out Page 1. Give students 2 to 3 minutes per mini box . Challenge them to physically turn their page upside down before drawing. Encourage them to add eyes, ears, wheels, legs, or hats. Remind students that simple shapes make hilarious characters!
Phase 3: The Grand Masterpiece (Slide 4 & Sheet Page 2) 00:20 – 00:35 (15 min)
Flip to Page 2. Play soft background music. Students transform the big mystery line into a full scene (adding a background like space, the ocean, or a jungle). Circulate and scribe sentence frames for students who need writing support.
Phase 4: Museum Walk & Spark Cheers (Slide 5) 00:35 – 00:45 (10 min)
Students place artwork on their desks. Give everyone 2 sticky dots or high-fives to award classmates. Gather in a circle for 3 volunteers to share: "My squiggle started as a line, but now it is a..."
If a 6-Year-Old Says "I'm Stuck":
"Rotate your paper like a steering wheel. What does it look like now?"
"Put two big cartoon googly eyes on it. Where is it looking?"
"Could it be a haircut for an alien? Or a trail of slime?"
Differentiation & Fast Finishers:
Needs Motor Support: Allow thicker markers or dictate sentences to teacher/peer.
Fast Finishers: Draw their OWN squiggle on the back and swap papers with a neighbor!

Silly Inventions Facilitation Guide
Target: Age 6 (K / Grade 1)
Total Time: 45 Minutes
Prep & Supplies
Print 2-sided sheets + distribute crayons/markers.
Core Objective
Combine disparate items to invent solutions for funny problems.
45-Minute Master Timeline
Phase 1: The Mashup Formula Hook (Slide 1–2) 00:00 – 00:08 (8 min)
Introduce the concept: "Inventors don't create from nothing; they smash two cool things together!" Walk through the Umbrella + Shoes = Puddle Boots example. Have the class do one quick oral mashup together (e.g., Pizza + Pillow = The Snack Bed!).
Phase 2: Silly Problem Storming (Slide 3 & Sheet Page 1) 00:08 – 00:18 (10 min)
Present the 3 goofy animal problems from Slide 3 (Chilly Giraffe, Forgetful Squirrel, Lazy Kitten). Have students pick one animal or make up their own silly problem. Guide them to circle two items from the Idea Spark Bank or pick two from their head.
Phase 3: Blueprint & Prototype Lab (Slide 4 & Sheet Page 1–2) 00:18 – 00:35 (17 min)
Students draft their blueprint on Page 1, naming their device (e.g., The Rocket-Broom 3000 ). Then on Page 2, they draw their invention in action solving the problem. Circulate and help students add crazy features like buttons, sound effects, or neon antennas!
Phase 4: Inventor Showcase & Patent Ceremony (Slide 5) 00:35 – 00:45 (10 min)
Pair students up for 3-minute partner pitches: "Behold! My invention is..." Then call 3 to 4 excited inventors up to present to the whole room. Have the class give a "Robot Clap" (beeping and clapping) to honor each new invention.
Spark Questions for 6-Year-Olds:
"What sound does your invention make when you turn it on?"
"Where is the secret turbo button? What does it do?"
"What happens if you feed it a piece of cheese?"
If Students Try to Draw Real Toys:
Acknowledge: "A video game console is cool, but what if it also served waffles?"
Add a wild twist: "Could it have wheels made of giant donuts?"
Celebrate the silliness—there are no physics laws in this lab!
