How to Cut Each 18″ × 42″ Half-Yard (Identical for A, B, C, D, E)
Uses Standard Quilter's Ruler
Strip 1 (9¾″ × 18″) Full 18″ Rectangle
Strip 2 (9¾″ × 18″) Full 18″ Rectangle
Strip 3 (9¾″ × 11½″) Pane Square (6½″ scrap)
Strip 4 (9¾″ × 11½″) Pane Square (6½″ scrap)
Rem. ~3″
Along the 42″ width of fabric (WOF), cut (4) strips measuring 9¾″ wide. Leave the first two strips at their full 18″ length. Trim the other two strips down to 11½″ tall. Repeat for all 5 fabrics!
Step-by-Step Column Sewing & Assembly
Step 1: Sew Pane Sets
Follow the Page 1 diagram to stitch each column's upper set (one 9¾″×11½″ pane + one 9¾″×18″ rectangle) and lower set. Each pair measures 9¾″ wide × 29″ unfinished.
Step 2: Join Upper to Lower
Sew the upper set directly to the lower set for each column. No middle row or divider is needed. Press this center horizontal seam toward the 18″ rectangle to nest seams.
Step 3: Join the 5 Columns
Pin Columns 1 through 5 side-by-side, matching the center horizontal seams. Stitch using a ¼″ seam allowance. Press long vertical seams open flat. Quilt finishes at 46¼″ × 57″!
