Score Sleuths: Music Reading Mission
Period: 45–50 min
Core Objective
Count barlines vs. measures and decode symbols, dynamics, and pitch clues on printed sheet music.
Materials Needed
1 printed Worksheet per student, pencils, highlighters (optional), Sub Answer Key (provided).
No Music Skills Needed!
Everything is fully annotated with visual keys and scripts below. You can lead this with zero musical training.
Quick Primer: How to Explain Musical Navigation
1. Bar Line The vertical lines cutting through the staff. Think of them like fences .
2. Measure (Bar) The space between two bar lines. Think of them like rooms inside a house.
3. Measure Numbers Little boxed numbers above the staff showing where you are in the piece.
4. Repeat Sign Double bar line with two dots (:|). It acts like a musical U-turn to go back!

Mission Launch: The Secret Musical Map
Say to class: "Musicians don't just read words—they read navigational roadmaps called scores. If you get lost on measure 14 during a concert, the whole orchestra crashes! Today, you are certified Score Sleuths solving a musical mystery."
→ Draw a 5-line staff on the board. Add 3 vertical bar lines. Ask: "How many vertical lines? (3) How many measure rooms did that create? (4)" Emphasize: We count the spaces, not just the lines!

Guided Demonstration: Decoding Score Clues
Hand out the Score Scavenger Hunt Worksheet (keep students from writing until told). Guide them to look at Excerpt A: The Clockwork Waltz .
Point to Measure 1: Point out the Treble Clef and the Time Signature (3/4).
Find the Bar Lines: Have students tap their pencil along each bar line to count 8 distinct measures.
Spot the Dynamics: Point out p (piano = soft) and f (forte = loud).
00:15 • 20 min
Independent & Partner Scavenger Hunt
Students work solo or with an elbow partner to complete the 4 Investigation Cases on the worksheet.
Sub Patrol Routine: Walk around the room. If a student is stuck on counting measures, have them use their finger to physically touch each measure "room" starting at #1. Remind them: the double bar line with dots at the end is a repeat!

Whole-Class Score Debrief & Clue Reveal
Call the class back together. Use your Score Sleuths Answer Key to reveal the answers.
• Check Measure Counting: Ask: "Who found the symbol in Measure 5 of Excerpt A?" (Forte dynamic). Point out how measure numbers restart or continue.
• Check the Boss Clue: Ask: "If Excerpt A has 8 measures and ends with a repeat sign, how many measures do musicians play in total?" (16 measures!).
00:45 • 5 min
Wrap-Up & Collect Worksheets
Have students write their name on their worksheet and pass them to the aisle. Collect all papers into the designated class folder.
Classroom Management Tips
Voice Level: Keep at Level 1 (quiet partner whisper) during the scavenger hunt.
Attention Getter: Clap a simple 4-beat rhythm (ta ta ti-ti ta) and have students clap it back silently.
No Instrument Rule: Emphasize that classroom instruments (keyboards, xylophones) are off-limits today.
Fast-Finisher Challenges
If students finish the worksheet early, have them turn it over and try:
Rhythm Math: Draw 4 measures of 4/4 time and write notes that equal exactly 4 beats per measure.
Score Designer: Add their own dynamic markings (p, mp, mf, f, ff) to create a dramatic song map.

The Musical Roadmap Challenge
Musicians rely on score roadmaps so everyone plays together. Solve these final two navigational puzzles:

Part 1: Case File A Key
Substitute Teacher Guide: Use this page during the whole-group debrief (at minute 35). Accept slight wording variations from students as long as the core musical concept is accurate.
Excerpt A Visual Guide: "The Clockwork Waltz" 3/4 Time • 8 Measures Total
[M.1] Dynamic 'p' 3 quarter notes (C-E-G)
[M.2] High C-G-E Separated by Bar Line 1
[M.3] Ascending line Separated by Bar Line 2
[M.4] Dotted Half Holds 3 beats; ends Sys 1
[M.5] Dynamic 'f' Forte / Loud start of Sys 2
[M.6] Stepping down Separated by Bar Line 5
[M.7] Half + Quarter 2 beats + 1 beat = 3 beats
[M.8] Repeat Sign (:|) Double bar + 2 dots
Case Round 1: Measure & Bar Line Patrol Answers
1. How many total measures are in Excerpt A? 8 measures
Teaching note: Point out the boxed numbers [1] through [8] above the staff lines. Each measure is a numbered container.
2. Look closely at System 1. How many vertical bar lines divide it into measures? 4 bar lines (or 3 inner dividers)
Teaching note: System 1 contains 4 distinct measures separated by 3 internal dividing bar lines plus 1 system-ending bar line. Accept 3, 4, or 5 if they count the left start line.
3. What is the Time Signature in Measure 1, and what does the top number tell us? 3/4 • 3 beats in each measure
Teaching note: Top number = count of beats per bar (3). Bottom number (4) means the quarter note gets 1 beat.
4. Find Measure 4. How many beats does that single dotted half note hold? 3 beats
Teaching note: A regular half note gets 2 beats. The dot adds half its value (+1 beat), totaling 3 full beats to fill the 3/4 measure.
Case Round 2: Symbol & Dynamic Safari Answers
5. Dynamic in M.1:
p = Piano (Soft / Quiet)
Italian word for soft. Not the instrument!
6. Sudden forte (loud):
Measure 5 (m. 5)
Marked with bold italic 'f' directly under the first note of system 2.
7. Symbol at end of M.8:
Repeat Sign (:|)
Tells the musician to go back to the beginning and play again.
